DEVOTION:  (Jesus said) "... 'Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.'" Revelation 2:10b

Faithful. By definition, the word "faithful" means to be "consistently trustworthy and loyal."

By that definition 17-year-old Stacey Irvine is a very faithful young lady.

You see, although she admits to having an occasional French fry with her boyfriend, Irvine only eats chicken nuggets. Since she was two years old she has only eaten chicken nuggets. Although I'm not a mathematician, that's 15 years of chicken nuggets.

Yucch!

Considering her diet, from the outside Irvine doesn't look any the worse for wear. On the inside, it's a different matter. Recently, she was taken to the hospital after she had struggled to breathe and then passed out.

Irvine's mom says, "The doctors told Stacey in no uncertain terms that she will die if she carries on like this." Now that's a problem since faithful Irvine maintains she can only eat chicken nuggets (and the occasional fry.) Hearing that kind of flawed reasoning her mom says, "I'm praying she can be helped, before it's too late."

I hope so too.

Now there is a reason why I bring Stacey Irvine to your attention.

She is proof that most people are faithful in following something. Some folks are faithful to watching a TV program, others to following their favorite football team, yet others to having a clean house and at least one person is faithful to eating only chicken nuggets.

Most people, even you, are pretty faithful to something or somebody.

The trick is to find something or somebody worthy of your faithfulness.

Chicken nuggets may be a grand thing but, when all is said and done, they are still chicken nuggets and, therefore, cannot be expected to produce much in the way of a long-term benefit or great advantage to its faithful followers.

On a greater or lesser scale, the same can be said about almost everything else in this world that people follow. By that I'm referring to movie stars, political candidates, music idols, etc.

Almost everything and everybody else makes hollow promises to people -- almost everybody. You see, in Jesus we have the exception to that rule.

When Jesus says something, you can take His words to the bank. If He says, "Be faithful unto death and I will give you a crown of life," He means it. If He says, "Call upon Me in the day of trouble" (see Psalm 50:15), you can be sure His deliverance to your disastrous day is on its way.

So, before this devotion closes, let me ask, what thing or person in this world do you love as much as Stacey Irvine loves chicken nuggets? I'll let you fill in that blank.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, this world has produced many things that falsely claim rewards and benefits toward those who follow. Today we ask that You will send the Holy Spirit, so they may reject that which is wrong and ridiculous and embrace the Savior, who is worthy of our faithfulness. In His Name. Amen.

Jonas's Updates

Posted 1 day ago
About three weeks ago the nutritionist prescribed that Jonas keep his feeding tube turned on continuously because she was concerned that his weight was doing too much yo-yoing. Up and down, down and up, mostly more down than up. And over three weeks time he has gradually come up to the point that we are finally to the 100 lbs mark! Yay! He has even grown a bit taller through all of this and we had to take him shopping to buy some longer jeans. = ) As the seasons come and go, and each round of chemo gets behind him, he is starting to feel like he can see the light at the end of the tunnel. This this week he will go in the hospital for five days of chemo and that will be one more that is out of the way.
This time when Jonas goes into the hospital he will have his new uBass guitar to take with him!!!! WooHoo! Thank you to everyone who made that possible! Jonas said that Mr. Morales and the PLMS orchestra students took a collection and paid off the final amount! Thank you so much. He is already plugged into that thing constantly and you don't know how much that will help him pass the time in the hospital. I can't think of any one thing that he will get more use out of.
The St. Partick's Day party for Jake Cavanaugh was FANTASTIC!!! I didn't have my facts straight about their fundraising. The fundraiser was most specifically for Children's Mercy Hospital. Jonas was the honorary recipient of sorts, and they will be making a donation to Jonas, but it was primarily a fundraiser for the hospital. And rightly so!!! What a fantastic party! Jake and his family are dealy loved by their whole community. There were hundreds of people there. Jonas danced and mingled and once again stayed way past the time we thought he was capapble of. We were so grateful to all of our friends who came to celebrate with us. Mark, Debi, and Riley Hartley, Chuck and Becky Quesenberry, Kirk and Cindy Morehead, Brad and Vicki Wood, Caitlin, Amanda, Sabrina, The whole Bobal family, Mike, Linda, and Nick Hubbuch, Kim and Josh Hill, Zach, Vera, and Ben Dowdle, and my 'serogate' daughter for the evening Alyssa Coop. A special thank you to Debi Hartley and Kimberly Cutler for being the go-between for us and the Cavanaughs. Next year we hope to pitch-in and help in whatever way we can. What a wonderful event. Thank you to Jane and Kurt for letting us be part of it.

Practice that guitar so we can hear you play!
We love and miss you and can't wait to get back into our normal routine with you!

DEVOTION:  And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the Name that is above every name, so that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:8-11

I'm a dog lover, always have been.

Still, I do have my limits, limits which apparently aren't shared by Scott Janssen, the "Mushing Mortician."

Janssen is one of those brave souls whose dog team ran in this year's Iditarod in Alaska. According to the story he shared with the Anchorage Daily News, he was going through the Dalzell Gorge when one of his huskies, a nine-year-old dog named Marshall collapsed.

The dog stopped, dropped, and by the time Janssen examined him, he had stopped breathing.

In tears, Janssen acted like a true dog lover. He says it this way, "I had my mouth over his nose, breathing into his nose, as I was compressing and rubbing his chest, trying to work the air out."

Janssen's work paid off. Marshall took a breath, was mushed 32 miles to the Rohn checkpoint, where the vets gave him an IV and sent him home.

As I said, I love my dog, but I don't know if I'd go as far as Janssen did in saving Marshall, which takes me to the point of the devotion.

Did you ever consider what it meant for God's perfect Son to leave heaven and become one of us? Have you ever thought how big a step down it was for Jesus to be born a human, to live in this sad, sorry, sinful world? Have you ever reflected on what He left when He walked away from the praise of heaven to endure the mockery of humankind?

I doubt if I'd have gone that far to save sinful humankind. No, I wouldn't even consider doing what Jesus did.

Still, that is what Jesus did. He humbled Himself and lived a life of obedience, a life of obedience that took Him to the cross. There, having done all the Father had asked of Him, all which was necessary to save sinners, Jesus called out, "It is finished" (see John 19:30).

And it was finished. With His glorious resurrection from the dead and because of God's limitless grace and mercy, we who are brought to faith have been rescued and redeemed.

For that kind of love, that kind of faithfulness Jesus ought to be adored by every sinner. As Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, before Jesus every knee ought to bow and every tongue confess that He is my Lord.

THE PRAYER: Heavenly Father, may I -- a saved sinner -- show my gratitude for Your Son who left heaven to become human. May I hold His Name in deepest reverence and awe. As always, I ask it in His Name. Amen.

Libby Pailer update

Hello to all,

I just left mom at Mercy Skilled Nursing facility.  She did really well with the transfer. She's very happy to have all the tubes, wires extra tape etc. off of her body.  I could see that she has a lot more strength today and is determined to do what they say as far as rehab exercises etc.  She has a roommate - seems to be a very nice lady who has some other kind of heart issues.

Mom is in Room 79 - bed 1 or A and will probably be there a week.  That depends on how she's coming along with rehab.  The address is 12120 Conway Rd, Saint Louis, MO 63141 which is across the road from Mercy Hospital.  She has a phone in her room but really does not feel like talking too much yet.
Thank you once again for the continual prayers and support.

Love and blessings, Teresa, Larry & Renee

prayers for family and friends of Leonard Waalen

Leonard Waalen passed from death to eternal life this afternoon.  Please pray for his many family and friends, especially his wife Beverly.  Funeral arrangements are, of course, pending.

Peace be with you all.

Libby Pailer update

from Larry Pailer

Well folks! It doesn't look like Lib is coming home for a while. This morning (Tuesday) she had a dizzy spell while doing her physical exercises. The Social nurse and floor nurse advised her to take rehab for a few days. To this, like anyone else she wanted to go home. After they left, Teresa and I talked to her and she agreed to go. They will move her to a Rehab facility shortly. Which one is being decided by availability of a room. I will keep you all advised when I know. It is hard on her but it is the best and safest way for her to gain strenght and peace of mind. Our lord is guiding her and He is her divine Lord and God. Your prayers are our guiding force please please keep them up. May god's blessing be upon each and everyone. Thank you Lib and Larry pailer

DEVOTION:  (God says) "Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me. But to the wicked God says: "What right have you to recite My statutes or take My covenant on your lips? For you hate discipline, and you cast My words behind you." Psalm 50:15-17

The topic for today's Daily Devotion was brought to my attention by Mr. David Lanius, friend and faithful worker at the headquarters of Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Chardon High School in Ohio is blessed to have a big man on its staff.

At six feet, two inches and 300 pounds, Chardon, Ohio's, Assistant Coach Frank Hall truly is a big man. But you should know that his physical size is the least of the qualities which make him big. If you've been following the news, you may have heard of the coach. He's the teacher who stood up in the Chardon High cafeteria when a student-gunman opened fire.

The coach may be a big man, but even a big man can be cut down when he goes up against a pistol. That is a fact of life, but that fact didn't stop Hall from standing up, calling out and walking toward the gunman, from chasing the murderer out of the school.

That day's courage makes Hall a big man.

That's the story the news programs shared about Coach Hall. What the media didn't share is that the actions of the coach on that day of death were only a reflection of the kind of big man he has always been.

You see, Coach Hall is a Christian man, a man of faith.

Those who know him say he is the kind of fellow who has always gone out of his way to help others. He is the kind of man who has adopted four children, brought them into his family and is raising them as God's children.

A few weeks ago the media said that Coach Hall had probably saved the lives of other students. They called him a "hero." I would agree. He most certainly is that. But Hall's heroism should not be limited to a few seconds in a high school lunch room. He has always been a hero of faith.

The wonderful thing is this: there are many other such heroes in our congregations.

True, these other heroes may not face a gunman intent on murder; they may not be called upon to put their lives on the line, by looking down a pistol barrel. Even so, they are heroes.

They are heroes because, in a world which often makes fun of good men, they still do what is right; their actions are decided by their faith in the Savior who gave His life, so they might be forgiven and saved.

These men, thankful for what Jesus has done, try to follow Jesus' example. These men are not only willing to die for others, they are willing to live every day of their lives for others.

That is what a man does when he really knows the Savior.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in a world filled with trouble and terror, we pray You will raise up men, Christian men, who will try to reflect the Savior's strength and spirit of sacrifice to those around them, to those who come after them. This we pray in Jesus' Name. Amen.

CATECHISM:
Question: Why is it called the Apostles' Creed?
Answer: It is called the Apostles' Creed, not because it was written by the Apostles' themsevles, but because it states briefly the doctrine (teaching) which God gave through the apostles in the Bible.  The creed is trinitarian because the Scriptures reveal God as triune,  Christians are baptized in the name of the triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
