The painful intestinal condition Jonas has is called Neutropenic Typhlitis. You can read more about it here:
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/183791-overview#1
In a nutshell, his entire large intestine is inflamed and infected. The prescription for care is complete bowel rest. No food by mouth. No food by g-tube. He will be getting all of his nutrition (what little he can) by iv. The less work the bowel has to do, the sooner it can repair itself. At this time there is no need for surgery. Whew. This is still a very serious and delicate situation. It could take days or weeks to get under control. Although it is a very critical condition for a pediatric chemo patient, they feel we've caught it early enough to be confident about his recovery. He has not been in this much pain since he first was hospitalized with cancer and I wish there was more we could do to hasten his recovery.
Thank you for all of your warm words of comfort and offers to be of help. Right now I can't even think of what that might be. For the time being, Jonas primarily needs rest. It hurts him to sit or stand, to lay on his back or to contract his muscles. Once he starts to feel better, I know he would love some company.
- - I was interrupted during writing this by his evening CA (nurse's assistant). I'll paraphrase. She said she was our CA last night but we had all gone to sleep so she didn't get to meet us. She wanted us to know how much she LOVES this boy. He was in such pain last night but was still so full of thank yous and I'm sorrys and helpful behavior...and she wanted us to know what a great kid we have. She went on and on. "My all-time favorite patient! " she said. I had to agree.
It reminds me of an anecdote I have told the kids for years. When you squeeze an orange or put pressure on an orange, you get orange juice out. You don't get apple juice or milk or tea. You can only get out what is there inside. It's the same with people. When the pressure is on, what comes out is whatever is inside. If you have stored up anger and hatred, that's what comes out. If you have stored up kindness and good will, calm and perseverance that's what comes out. No one is perfect, and we are all a combination of our best attributes and our flaws. But if I had to witness what I know about Jonas, his character through this so far says it all.

I think we are going to have to give this boy some more names. I don't think four are enough to match his courage and grace. Please tell Jonas that he is an inspiration to us all and that we are proud to be his friends. Tell him to stay strong and that this setback is only temporary. We hope that by knowing that we are thinking of him and his struggles, Jonas can gain strength.

So glad you caught it early. Our prayers continue for Jonas and your family. And you are so right about whats on the inside. Love you all and hope to get to see you sometime. We were going thru old pictures the other day and ran across a few of the kids all together. We never dreamed where our futures would take us. Please know that your posts are appreciated and read. Jonas is the most awesome kid! Keep fighting!

We're so sorry to hear about this setback for Jonas. We're thinking of him every day and sending him hopeful thoughts and prayers for peace and healing.
Thank you for sharing with us the axiom you've taught your kids. I always appreciate your focus on kindness, tolerance and compassion. That you've planted this seed within your children is clear. Jonas is much of a human being. So are you.
All our best,

St. John's Group Email Prayer request from Sandra Perricone

Please pray for our dear friend Jackie Snead who is undergoing double masectomy tomorrow.

St. John's Group Email Wednesday, February 1, 2012

DEVOTION:
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight! Isaiah 5:20-21

It's a fact of life: the meanings of words change.

For example, at Christmas we heard people sing, "Don we now our gay apparel." The word "gay" used to mean festive. In the musical West Side Story, Maria sings, "I feel pretty and witty and gay." In that number she was talking about her happiness, not her sexual preferences.

Recently, students in the Canyons School District in Utah named the cougar as their top choice for school mascot at their new school. Some people complained. They complained because the term "cougar," at least in some circles, is an uncomplimentary term to describe a woman, who is seeking a younger man.

Officials at the school district decided a better name for the school's animal representative would be "The Chargers."

It was a decision which garnered far more attention than if they had let matters be.

Still, it makes the point: words change in their meaning, including the word "Savior."

Most readers of the Daily Devotion will correctly acknowledge Jesus as their Savior. By that they mean Jesus is God's sinless Son, who was born into this world to take our place and rescue us from damnation. True Man and true God, He was our Substitute under the Law; He resisted all temptation to sin and then defeated death. All this He did to redeem our sinful souls. Now, all who are given faith in Him are forgiven and saved.

But that is not always what others mean when they use the word, Savior.

For some, Savior means Jesus is a leader, whose example we should follow.

For some, Savior means Jesus is a trailblazer and, if we do as He did, we can become our own savior.

For some, Savior means Jesus is a motivator, who inspires us to be better than we were.

For some, Savior means Jesus is a bringer of social change.

The list of variations and interpretations to the work and Person of Jesus of Nazareth are numerous, and they are, insofar as they disagree with Scripture, wrong.

These descriptions are put forth by those who bend, fold, spindle and mutilate the Word. As Isaiah said, they are those who "call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!"

To those who would try to cloud the clear message of salvation, God gives this verdict: "Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and shrewd in their own sight!"

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me the grace and faithfulness to follow the Savior of Scripture. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:
For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:22-24

Tim Tebow's season as quarterback for the Denver Broncos is over.

That doesn't mean the season has closed down for his critics. One columnist from the East Coast showed his knowledge of Scripture, when he compared Tebow to the Pharisees that Jesus regularly corrected.

He contends that when the quarterback prays on the sidelines at a game, it is the same as when the Pharisees prayed on the street corners. The author went so far as to quote Jesus who said, "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can you escape the damnation of hell?" (Matthew 23:33).

Finally, he also maintains every time Tebow prays on the field he is sinning against Matthew 6:5. You remember the passage: "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth; they have received their reward in full."

If I read the Bible-quoting critic correctly, Christians, especially famous Christians, are free to pray as long as nobody sees them do it.

Now I have nothing against the man quoting Scripture. But I would love to hear what he does with a passage like Acts 16:25, where Paul and Silas were praying in a public prison or Acts 2:42, where the Christians prayed publicly in the temple or Acts 16:13, where Paul spoke to Lydia at the public place of prayer or ... let's just sum it up by quoting 1 Thessalonians 5:17: "Pray without ceasing."

Indeed, the writer would know nothing about Tebow's prayer if the network cameras weren't reporting his every move. To me it seems the networks, not Tim Tebow, are most concerned about him being seen.

From what I've been able to gather, Tebow doesn't wait for the cameras to show up before he prays. He just prays whether the cameras are there or not. But that's not the point.

That people are upset with a Christian man who is practicing his faith is what theologians know as the offense of the cross. It is the one offense that Christians are commanded to give.

The point is this: Tebow is a Christian American, and as far as I know, freedom of religion is one of those rights all Americans have, and it is the writer's right to not watch Tebow pray.

What is not his right is to try and twist Scripture to his purpose.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, as Christians we try, as much as possible, to live in harmony with everyone. Still, we ask for the courage, when necessary, to give the offense of the cross. This we ask in the Name of our crucified and risen Savior. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Monday, January 30, 2012

DEVOTION: (from LHM)
Preach the Word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth. 2 Timothy 4:2-4

The old comic strip "Lil Abner" used to have a character, the community preacher who was known as "Marryin' Sam." Marryin' Sam specialized in two-dollar weddings.

Over the years I've met a few preachers who were like that character. I've also met a few who were Buryin' Sams. By that I mean they would for a price provide a eulogy service for just about anyone. The faith of the dearly departed or his family or anyone else was quite unimportant.

Most Lutheran pastors aren't that way -- at least not from my experience.

That's why I believe most will understand the story of a pastor who was trying to reach out to a dying man, a dying man who had spent a lifetime laughing at the concept of a Savior and Jesus' blood-bought salvation.

During the months before the man's departure, the minister would occasionally stop by to see him. If he couldn't stop, he would send the fellow a short note of encouragement. Always, always the minister was careful to not let the door slam shut that the Holy Spirit had opened.

Finally the time of the man's ending was near. Aware his clock would soon stop ticking, the sick man sent for the minister. He began the conversation saying, "I didn't ask you here so you could regale me with religion. I did, however, want to thank you for your kindness."

Understanding the rules of the conversation, the minister inquired, "May I ask one question?"

"Yes," said the man, "one question as long as it isn't about religion."

The minister spoke: "Okay. Here goes. I'm preaching tomorrow. Quite a few people will be there to hear me. Some, like you, may soon be facing death. Here's my question: What shall I preach about?"

There was a long silence. The reply came: "Pastor, preach Christ to them. Preach Christ."

That was, of course, the admonition St. Paul gave to young Timothy. Preach the Word, condemn the sin, proclaim the Gospel, boldly and patiently encourage God's people to a way of living that pleases Him.

Even though doing what St. Paul encouraged is not always popular, over the centuries every true preacher has taken the apostle's words seriously.

Why? Because there is no other savior who can forgive sins, no other redeemer who can save souls. Which, during the first month of the new year, leads me to share this encouragement: If you have a preacher who is faithful to the Word, please encourage and thank him.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, for all You have done I am most thankful. Through the Holy Spirit's calling of faithful preachers I have been blessed. Now may these undershepherds be empowered to reach out to those who are lost and show them their sin as well as the Savior. In Your Name I ask it. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: What did the Israelites do with the dough they had without the yeast in it as they were leaving Egypt?  They left it in the kneading troughs, wrapped it all up in cloths and carried it on their shoulders out of Egypt.  It was without yeast. (Dolores Deblaze is our champ!)

TODAY'S QUIZ: What animals were supposed to be sacrificed at the consecration of a priest?

CATECHISM:
Close of the commandments

Question: What does God say about all these commandments?
Answer:
He says, "I the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep my commandments."

Question #2: What does this mean?
Answer #2: God threatens to punish all who break these commandments.  Therefore, we should fear his wrath and not do anything against them.  But He promises grace and every blessing to all who keep these commandments.  Therefore, we should also love and trust in Him and gladly do what He commands.

NEWS:
11am WORSHIP WAS WONDERFUL YESTERDAY!!!
At least that is what I heard from the many great comments I have received.

A big thank you to all of you who showed up yesterday and especially to the twelve preschool kids and their parents who showed up.

For those of you who were ther yesterday, I would appreciate your comments so that we can make it the best possible worship experience for everyone.  I PROMISE that I won't get as "long winded" as I did yesterday.

Remember that there is COMMUNION this coming Sunday!

St. John's Group Email review of first 11am serice

Just wanted to say thank you to all of the wonderful folks who showed up to our first 11am worship today.  I think it went very well and that the Lord God is pleased.  I hope you all had as great a time as I did.

What I would like from all who attended now is your commments and suggestions so that we can make it the most worshipful experience possible.  All suggestions are welcome but remember to speak the truth in love.  hehe.  Let me know what you liked the most about it too.

I promise that I won't be quite as "long winded" next Sunday as I was today, especially because we are going to have communion next week.  The Holy Spirit just got me going today, I guess.

God's peace on your week!
Pastor
