DEVOTION:
In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord. Psalms 10:2-3

Darrell Kenneth Timothy Snyder is a robber.

No, make that Darrell Kenneth Timothy Snyder is a would-be robber. To be a robber, you actually have to steal something. So far, Darrell Kenneth Timothy Snyder is zero for three.

Let me explain. On August 19th Snyder walked into a convenience store in a small town east of Toronto. He waved around a gun, but he didn't say anything and he made no demands. Perhaps he had been tongue-tied, but he ended up leaving the store without any money.

Eight minutes later, Snyder, with his gun still being waved all around, walked into a fast-food place. The employees of the eatery saw the gun and hid themselves. Snyder left the diner without any ill-gotten goods to show for his trouble. That was strike two.

Five minutes after the diner failure Snyder accosted a man on the street. Trying to hold him up, he once again showed his gun, and this time he actually demanded some money. Probably Snyder did so in a voice that was unsure and tentative. Whatever the reason, the man being held up refused to cooperate.

To his credit, Snyder didn't shoot the fellow; he just walked away empty-handed.

Like I said, Snyder can only be considered a would-be robber. When he heard the police were looking for him, he ended his walk on the wrong side of the law and turned himself in.

As the Psalmist says, Snyder was caught in the schemes he had devised.

Most of humanity is better, more accomplished, more successful at sinning than is Snyder. By that I mean we usually manage to hide our sins from those around us. Of course, we can't hide our wrongful thoughts, words and actions from the Lord.

He sees what we do wrong as well as what we purpose to do wrong.

Seeing the condition of our hearts and lives, our Creator saw that we were helpless, hopeless.

This is why He sent His Son to save us. Jesus gathered together our sins, those which we've actually committed, those which we've attempted and those which we only imagined. He gathered those sins and carried them to the cross. There, in an incredibly selfless act, the innocent Son of God paid the price which our wrongdoing had earned.

Three days later, in the Person of the living, risen Lord Jesus, all the world saw that His work of redemption had been successful, and all who believe on Him as Savior would be able to live their lives as forgiven children of God.

This is why today we give thanks the Savior was more successful at His work than Darrell Kenneth Timothy Snyder was in his.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, for giving Your life as a ransom for mine, I praise You. No matter what successes and failures I have in life, I pray You will always be successful in keeping me as one of Your forgiven children. This I pray in Your holy Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears that they might not hear. Zechariah 7:11

Every once in a while I tell my wife, Pam, that it sure would be nice if we could win a $50 million dollar Lotto Max as did the individual in Woodbridge, Ontario.

That's when she points out to me that before we can win Lotto Max we have to buy a ticket from the Lotto Max. It always disturbs me when Pam gets both practical and right at the same time.

Still, I guess there's not much difference between not buying a ticket and not knowing you have the winning ticket. Ignorance may indeed be the condition for Canada's most recent $50 million winner.

The numbers were publicly announced and ... nothing. Nobody came forward. Nobody jumped up and down yelling, "It's me! I've got it! I've got it!"

Now it's true, the winner could be consulting his lawyer or quitting his job or planning to move to Tahiti. But it's just as likely he's oblivious to the fact he's carrying the winning ticket in his wallet or her purse ... or they've just thrown it away.

That's a terrible thought, isn't it, to throw away $50 million?

This really takes me to the point of this devotion. Through the bloody sacrifice of the Savior, because of His third-day resurrection from the dead, all who are brought to faith in the Christ are forgiven of their sins and guaranteed eternal life.

In short, they are winners. The Lord has given them riches that would make a Lotto Max winner feel like he's a pauper.

In contrast to us there are others -- others who should be winners -- but who aren't. Like the recent Lotto Max winner there are two possibilities for the situation.

1. The first possibility is they haven't heard; they don't realize Jesus has given His life for their salvation. These folks remain in ignorance.

2. The second possibility is they've heard and they're just too busy doing other things, making other plans, and they intend, someday, to get around to believing ... just not right now.

It makes little difference if a person is unsaved because of ignorance or because salvation is not a high priority -- the end result is the same. They should have been winners, but they're not.

That's another terrible thought, isn't it, to have eternal life given to you, but not received by you?

This is why we who already have been blessed need to make use of every opportunity of pointing people to Jesus -- to tell of the blessings which come from knowing Him as Lord and Savior.

To tell them Jesus has made them winners.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, on my own I am a failure, a lost sinner. With faith in my Savior, Jesus, I have been forgiven, adopted and granted eternal life. Now I ask that, if it be possible, other souls which are lost today may soon be saved. In Jesus' Name, I pray it. Amen.

St. John's C.H.U.R.C.H. Ministry

needs your help to "build" 50 shower kits for this year's "Stand Down Dinner" for our areas veterans and homeless.  Our Warren County Health Department is providing a shower trailer for that day (November 19, 2011); but, shower kits are needed to provide essentials for those that want to take advantage of the shower trailer.  So, we are "building" 50 shower kits for that purpose.

If you can help with this project, the following items are needed at St. John's by Friday, November 11th

Please put your donated items on the "spare pew" in the church overflow area.

We will need 50 each of the following "new" items:

As you can see, there are many of our neighbors that really need our help.  God works "through" each and every one of us.

IMPORTANT: If you can help, or have any questions, please call Sandy Robine at 456-4061 or email at     snsrobine@centurytel.net   DIRECT.  Thank you!

***Please note that the "hygiene" kits that our youth group are making are different from these "shower" kits.  The youth still are making their 300 hygiene kits for the same event.  Your contact for the youth group project is Toni Mauch.
