We will need 50 each of the following "new" items:

DEVOTION:(Jesus said) "What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Luke 11:11-13

The questions Jesus asked in the passage above are known as rhetorical questions.

My high school English professor told me a rhetorical question was one which had an answer that was so obvious it didn't need a reply. If you reread that passage, you will almost automatically find yourself saying, "No father would ever do such a thing. Not never. No how."

This past week I saw a video that made me think Jesus' questions weren't as rhetorical as I had once thought.

The video was of a fellow attending a Dodgers-Marlins game. A fly ball was hit in his direction and he tried to catch it. Now there's nothing wrong with that. The wrong part comes when you realize he was holding his little girl. In order to catch the ball, he dropped his daughter.

And I do mean he dropped her.

To make a long story short, his wife gave him a dirty look; his daughter gave him a shot in the chest, and he didn't get the ball.

Now I only share this story because I think there is more than this one fellow dropping his child ... not literally, maybe, but figuratively.

In recent years I've heard numerous parents say things like "I had religion forced down my throat when I was young. I'm not going to do that to my kids." Or, "When my child is old enough, I'm going to let him decide what religion, if any, he wants."

To many those words sound both modern and sophisticated; to me it sounds like some parents are dropping their children. Think about it. Are those parents consistent? Do they say things like "My parents forced me to read, spell, learn math, and I'm not going to do that to my children?" Do they say, "When my child is old enough, I'm going to let him decide if he wants to have manners, not wear diapers, etc?" Of course not, they teach their children the important things.

Indeed, the Lord made parents so they could show their children the way. Moms and dads were designed to be the loving Savior's first, foremost and best witnesses to His little ones -- witnesses to Jesus. That's what a parent will be; unless, of course, they drop the ball (child).

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I pray for parents, especially Christian parents. You have entrusted them with a wonderful -- a great opportunity. May every parent do his or her best to reflect the love they have received from Jesus. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

The SPirit of the Lord is on me, because he has annointed me to preach good news to the poor.  he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

DEVOTION:  (The LORD says) "And call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me." Psalm 50:15

Seven acres isn't a lot of ground ... usually.

Of course, when it's dark, and you're all alone, and you've never been on those seven acres before, that property can get very big.

That was the situation in which a father, mother and three-week-old baby found themselves when the sun went down and they were lost in the middle of the Headless Horseman corn maze at Connors Farm.

Not used to such a situation, the mother, in a panic, called 911. For almost seven and a half minutes the dispatcher talked to the husband and wife. He assured them that help was on the way and they calmed down. Finally, an officer reached them and they were brought to safety.

Since that story hit the news the media has had a field day. They revealed the family's name, that the parents and child were only a few yards away from the road, that the owners of the maze had all kinds of signs to help people get out, and that the family could have walked through the corn rows to get their bearings.

All of which is true and logical and sensible unless it's dark and you're all alone and you're, well, you get the idea.

Now there may be people in this world who have managed to avoid all forms of trouble. If, however, you are an individual who has seen difficulties and more than your fair share of trouble, the words of the Lord as recorded by the psalmist are incredibly comforting.

In Psalm 50 the Lord says, "Call upon Me in the day of trouble." Did you notice the Lord didn't say that there was no such thing as trouble; nor did He deny that troubles can cause a person legitimate concerns.

No, trouble is real, but so is God's love. Our passage assures us that when your trouble comes -- whatever trouble that might be -- He will be there to deliver us.

For a number of reasons, no one should be surprised at the Lord's promise. First, as the Creator of all that is, the Lord is far greater, far more powerful than any trouble this world can produce.

Second, in the Person of His Son, our Savior, the Lord has already shown He is committed to fixing that which was broken. So we might be forgiven, so He might declare us innocent of wrongdoing the Lord Jesus took our place by perfectly fulfilling all the divine laws, by resisting every temptation and by defeating death.

Both logic and Scripture tell us that if the Son of God was sacrificed so we could be delivered from our great enemies -- sin, death and devil -- then we can also be sure the Lord will deal and deliver us from those lesser troubles as well.

This pretty much explains that passage except for that last little bit, the part about how after trouble has come and after the Lord has dealt with that trouble He expects that we show a grateful heart: just like that family showed their gratitude when the policeman delivered them from the maze.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in this sinful world trouble is sure to come to us all. When that happens, may we place ourselves into Your hands for deliverance. This I pray in the Name of Him who is the cause for my faith. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Don't know if this works into a sermon, but I thought it was pretty cute - If nothing else, it made me grin!

From a Posting on the Saint Louis Cardinals' Rally Squirrel's page...

Prayer for Saturday night:
"Our Father who art in St. Louis, Baseball be thy game. Thy will be done, the World Series will be won, on the field, as well as in the bullpen. Give us this day our hot bats & forgive us on our errors, as we forgive those who homerun against us. Lead us not into defeat, but...help us BEAT THE RANGERS. DEVOTION:  (The LORD said) "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55:9

The headline of the story said the brilliant minds employed at Panasonic had come up with a new invention: a robot with 24 fingers which can wash people's hair.

Immediately I thought how silly can you get? I'll write a Daily Devotion on people's search for ridiculous gadgetry. At least that was my intent.

To make a long story short, this is that devotion. But it certainly hasn't gone where I thought it would. That's because both the story and the invention -- are more -- far more than I thought.

Let me explain. For years Japan has had a low birth rate. As a result, the average age of the Japanese is rising and the number of young to take care of the elderly is declining. The folks at Panasonic thought we can't change aging or birth rates, but we can come up with some inventions that will help eliminate some of the more boring, time-consuming jobs that must be done. In this way our caretakers will be freed to do work which is more worthwhile.

From my new perspective, that is, having read the article, I was able to understand.

Over the years the same thing has happened to me in regard to comprehending God's will.

He does or allows something to happen which just doesn't make sense to me. Using my very limited vision and incredibly small bit of understanding, I judge Him ... and sometimes I judge Him harshly. Yes, I know that's terrible and wrong, but I've done it, and you probably have too.

* It is only later, when we look back, that we can get some insights into the Lord's good purpose.

* Only in retrospect do we realize that God's ways and thoughts are truly above ours.

* Only when we examine all the evidence are we able to comprehend that God is always good and His ways are always best.

Always!

You would think by now we would understand that we would put the best construction on all which the Lord does. The ability to pray, "Thy will be done," and mean it is a quality of faith for which we need to pray.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I believe in You; help my unbelief. Today I ask You to keep me from doubting and criticizing You. Send Your Holy Spirit upon me so I may be able to trust You with all my heart, soul and mind. This I pray in the Savior's Name. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Jonas update

Jonas's Updates

Thursday, at his appointment to be admitted, Dr.Hughes showed us the side by side comparison of the old MRI with the new. And that stinking tumor has diminished significantly! Yay! Those images are just the hardest things to decipher, and I understand why it takes years of schooling to read them. It's like looking at a negative of a photo.Everything is shades of black and white: bones, cartilage, soft tissue, canals, sinus pockets, etc, etc. As a layperson, I have never been able to see exactly what tumor's perameters are or how many tendrils it has, or what it actually looks like (which is very frustrating to me). The only thing I have been able to make out is asymmetry: like when there should be two eyeballs, two nasal canals, two maxillary sinuses, and two of each of the other sinuses-, sometimes there was an obvious shadowing over one of the sides making it obvious there was a mass in the way. Well, this time, we almost didn't need a side by side comparison! It looked like almost everything was perfectly symmetrical! i couldn't really tell how much it had receded but the doctor said that they were very pleased and called it substantial. No doubt about it. The poison is working! Science isn't perfect, and we are no where out of the woods yet, but I am so grateful for all the strides they are making in cancer research. Trial and error. Working up new and more successfully proven protocol. Forty years ago cancer was a death sentence for children, but every year more children survive and are living longer and longer. Trust me, no one would put their child through this if there was something better out there proven to work. No one.
Jonas also told the doctor he noticed that they also did a spinal scan and wanted to know why. Dr. Hughes said that, yes it was true, they had. They did it because there was some indication that one of the tentacles showed some play at the skull base and he wanted to make sure it hadn't gotten to the spinal column....and he was pleased to say that it had not. So more good news all around. After our discussion, Jonas was so very pleased to be admitted for more chemo. "Bring it on!" he said. = )
Welcome, angie
