Jonas's Updates
September 26, Monday
Posted 1 day agoJonas made counts today and has been admitted to the hospital for the next three or four days to get chemo. He spent the weekend sleeping late and eating whatever he could get his hands on. The next few days will be lots of interrupted sleep and upset stomach.
Over these last few months, Jonas has not had the energy, the physical capacity or the desire to do anything more that recover from the debilitation and pain from this cancer. I would expect nothing more. As he started to feel better, we looked for things for him to do other than play video games and that might give him something to show for his progress. The ChildLife specialists regularly came by the room offering him a chance to come to their activity room to play bingo or to draw/paint/color something. One day, when he was feeling especially full of gusto, they came by and offered him the chance to make a Duck Tape wallet. Christine Laird was visiting that day andencouraged him to go give it a try. He got pretty invested in it. The wallet is totally functional and kind of quirky!. I have used it ever since. Christine saw how distracting it was for him and promptly went out and bought about a dozen different colors and patterns (you wouldn't believe what is out there). He made a wallet for his dad, a purse for Blaire, a totebag for Brette.... He has actually gotten pretty good at it and has made some wallets to raffle off at one of the fundraisers. I will post some pictures later. They are pretttt cool. Now I think we are ready to get more invested into school work.
Have you seen the movie HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON? It's a great animated family film. I've heard kids and adults both say how much they love it. It just didn't get much press when it came out. This Wednesday is your chance to get to see it at the theatre! = ) Dickenson Theatre on Douglas Rd on Lee's Summit is having a special showing this Wednesday night at 7pm and the proceeds to be donated to Jonas. How cool is that? Jonas won't be able to be there, but Brette (his big sister) is planning to skype him from the movie so that he can feel connected. Hope you can come.....
Friday Jonas gets an MRI of his head/brain to see just how much that filthy tumor has shrunken and to set up a model for the PT machine. Hopefully, we will have great progress to share with you then.
Love to you all....Send a message

Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honrable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excelllence, if there is anythign worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
Brothers and sisters of St. John's,
It sure is easy to be negative isn't it. I, along with many of you, have had my share of bad days lately. It seems as though we all have. Most of that is because we have let our circumstances rule how we think, act and live.
My brothers and sisters, this need not be. We have been recreated in Christ by virtue of our baptisms. We are a new creation! The old has gone! The new has come! We don't have to let our circumstances rule who we are! We can let Christ do that! We can be positive people! We can be lights in a dark world! We can share the love of Christ with those who need it! We can forgive those who sin against us.
Last night at our voters meeting, the recommendations of the CARE process were approved by a large majority!
This tells us that the majority of us want to be positive people! We want to affect a positive change on our church and on our community. We want to grow in our relationship with Him and with each other!
I want to assure you that I have already begun working on that within myself. Or I should say, the Holy Spirit has begun working that in me. I have confessed many times to you that I have not always beent he most positive person, and have at times, been quite negative toward others. I have let the circumstances rule over me instead of the Holy Spirit. I can assure you that I am going to do everything I can to affect positive change and be a postive role model and leader for this congregation from this time forward!
But I need your help! I can't do it myself. I am only one person. At last count there are 523 members of St. John's. All of you need to be a positive and constant light for the Gospel in this place as well! Everyone needs to do whatever he or she can to move the Gospel that is in you to the outside so that others can see it clearly.
I also want to ask your help for me personally. As with all of you, it is very easy for me to let the circumstances of life shape me and make me into a person I don't want to become. I need your positive encouragement as well. We all need to ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER in the Gospel!
As we move forward with these recommendations let us always keep the Gospel before us! Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us! Let us strive to be lights in a dark world so that the Holy Spirit can work freely among us!
Prayer: Lord God, help us all to move forward in the light of your truth that we all may know more and more the power of Your love. Amen.

| Jesus said) "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13 Dakota Meyer. I hope you remember his name. When his buddies were pinned down in Afghanistan, he asked for permission to go in and get them. He was told it was too dangerous. He asked a second time, a third and a fourth. Each time he was told it was too dangerous. After the fourth ask, Meyer went in anyway. He says, "That's what brothers do for each other." Firing at the enemy from a Humvee, Meyer and his driver were the targets for fire from AK-47s, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars. When they came across some Afghan fighters, they loaded them up and got them to safety. Although he and his comrade had done all -- and more -- than anyone could expect, they went back in. Meyer said, "I didn't think I was going to die. I knew I was going to die." Well, he didn't die the second time they entered the kill zone -- nor the third, or the fourth or the fifth. By the time they managed to get to the four Americans who had been pinned down, they had been killed. Even so, Meyer risked his life bringing out their bodies. For his valor, Dakota Meyer has been given the Medal of Honor. One of the guests at the White House ceremony said he is "the epitome of the word, 'hero.' God bless him. I could not think of a finer thing for one human being to do for another than what he did." I almost agree. I say almost because I can think of something finer. While the Bible says, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends," Jesus gave up His life for those who despised Him, had plotted against Him, had betrayed Him and orchestrated His death. But there's more. Jesus died carrying the sins of every man, woman and child who ever lived. Indeed, He died carrying our sins. And while I am glad that Dakota Meyer was wrong -- and he lived -- for Jesus there was no such hope. The prophets had spoken of His death, and His own Father had said His innocent Son would pay the ransom price for our salvation. Greater love has no one than this, which is why I also pray that you remember the Name, Jesus. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, that I, a sinner, would be the recipient of Jesus' love is a great and wonderful mystery. For His sacrifice on Calvary's cross and His third day resurrection from the borrowed tomb, I shall always be grateful. May my life reflect that gratitude. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen. |

Re:

There is an organization in Massachusetts called the Brookline Political Action for Peace.
I'm not entirely sure why they tacked the words "for peace" onto their name since their agenda is probably going to bring about a lot of things, and peace isn't likely to be one of them.
And what is the agenda of the Brookline Political Action for Peace (BPAFP)? It's simply this: they want the city's town meeting to urge the local school committee to stop requiring principals to have the Pledge of Allegiance recited during morning announcements.
According to the BPAFP, the pledge has
1. no educational value, and is
2. a loyalty oath reminiscent of McCarthyism or some horrific totalitarian regimes, and is
3. at odds with America's most important traditions.
Wow! All those bad things in that short little Pledge of Allegiance.
The next thing you know, somebody is going to take a shot at hot dogs, apple pie and motherhood. After all, hot dogs have chemicals, and apple pie is fattening and motherhood is ... well, I can't think of anything negative to say about motherhood.
Understand, I'm not a believer in the idea of "my country, right or wrong, my country." On the other hand, I believe -- and the Lord suggests -- that there are principles and higher callings to which a person can and probably ought to align himself.
Even Jesus, as He began His last hours of suffering for our redemption, committed Himself to a higher duty than His own personal preference when He prayed ... "not My will, but Thy will be done" (Luke 22:42b).
Please understand, I'm not ignoring the words of James who said our "yes" or "no" ought to be sufficient. I am saying the Lord recognizes the prayerful promises of His faithful people, and so does our nation.
And if pledging faithfulness to a nation which is under God is a bad thing for our country's children, I feel sorry for them and the nation, which is just my way of saying ...
old Ben Franklin was right when he said, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."
And that's true for church, as well as country.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in this life there are things which ought to command respect and loyalty, things to which a person should be aligned. May our children find -- under Your guidance -- that this nation is worthy of their allegiance. This I ask in the Savior's Name. Amen. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

St. John's Group Email update on Jonas Borchert
UpdatesJonas's Updates
September 20, 2011
Posted 21 hours agoHello from Houston. Jonas is thriving!!
I'm sorry I have not posted in a couple of weeks. Time seems to have just flown by. A combination of computer glitches, family dynamics, and new routines have kept me from posting like I had in the past. All that behind me, I will try to do a better job keeping everyone upt-to-date. We are now settled into a Marriott Property and have a base-camp to call our own. I think there were several people who had offered us Marriott points at one time. The hotel we stayed at originally would not accpet Marriotte points, so I did not record those offer like I should have. But this one does! So if you have any points we can use, that would be greatly appreciated.
Jonas has another round of chemo behind him and gets admitted on Thursday for three days for the next round. He has made it between every round of chemo here without going into the hospital for infection or neutropenia. Today was the first time that he needed a blood transfusion since we have been here, but he took it like a champ in an outpatient setting.
The doctor did explain to me recently that with cancers that are treated over this long a period of time, patients can expect to have many, many transfusions. They really like to keep those to an absolute minimum because the body can start to reject the new blood: something we do not want to happen. So far we have had NO adverse reactions. Smooth sailing.
Along with our chemo schedule, Jonas has had various other appointments with specialists. Most recently he had a five-hour psych test to evaluate his knowledge, logic, recall, etc.. The radiation that he is about to get may have an impact on his brain function and they want to be able to have a baseline to compare it to. His facilitator says that he is operating at high-level of skill which is a great way to start out, if there is any possibility of impairment. I am not terribly worried about this possibility. We have met two patients in the pediatric clinic who have undergone proton therapy in and around the brain. Both of them have had extremely uneventful episodes with the PT. No discomfort. No new side affects. No brain damage. I anticipate that we will find it to be the same.
Jonas has had several packages delivered to him since we arrived, containing dozens and dozens of letter from his classmates at school!!!! Wow. You can't believe what that does for this guys spirit. The first two he opened happened to be from kids he knew: Emily Tilotson and John Hogan. He was so jazzed, he just tore through the next dozen or so saying, "I don't even know most of these kids and they are writing to me anyway. Aw that is so nice!" He was really impressed by some of the artwork the kids drew for him, Shae Buffington and Sheldon, great stuff. Alyssa and Bobbie Nesselroad, Jonas says hello and thanks. He misses you too. Mr. Eaton, Jonas says, Hi.hi.hi.hi.....and then keeps laughing. He thought that card was a hoot!! We have several of them sitting out on the table for decoration and I plan to put some up on the wall. Whenever we have some down time he just rereads them and they really perk him up. I understand that more are coming, and he is really looking forward to that.
This past weekend, Joel came to visit for his birthday. 55! Saturday, the three of us drove down to Galveston (which wasn't even an hour's drive) to see the ocean. It was a lovely day. We walked the Strand, which is the main street of the old downtown, had ice cream at La King (an amazing old-fashioned candy shop), and watched a movie about the hurricane in 1900 that killed over 2500 people in Galeveston. We also went to Stewart Park and walked the beach looking for pebbles and shells. Jonas was a bit disappointed. He wanted so badly to play in the surf but he can't fully submerge because of his G-tube. We did get some fun pictures and I will try to post them tomorrow. It was a wonderful day and a great weekend.
I owe a big thank you to my Uncle Chuck who sent me a Forwarded Email about pharmacies. This article was about how we get scammed not only by insurance companies, but also by pharmacies. Some pharmacies mark up their drug prices (even generic) by as much as 1500% --which is why Walgreens can afford to put up a building every 10 miles. As it turns out, the article said, Costco has remarkable policy compared to all other pharmacies....they just don't do that mark up thing. And it is not just for their "members". ANYONE can get prescriptions filled at Costco. At least that is what the article said. (In our family we do that forwarding thing a lot. So I checked the information validity on Snopes.com which verified this as TRUE. Then I went to the Costco website myself to see if I could get pricing details on Jonas' meds.) As it turns out, this article was right on the money!!! I couldn't get the website to give me prices on ALL his meds, but one of them that I pay $630 for at the hospital pharmacy, I can get for $67! Same strength and same number of pills!!! I tell you this because when I find a money saver this big I think EVERYONE should know about it. I feel bad that I haven't price shopped pharmacies. I simply thought they were all the same. I don't know if there are others somewhere this low, but I don't think I have to look any further. Simply amazing. Thank you again, Uncle Chuck. If all of Jonas' other medications are that low, you litteraly saved us thousands and thousands of dollars. Knowledge is power.
I'm off to bed now, but wanted you all to know....
We feel your love and support across the miles.
Thank you. It sustains us and keeps us going.
I will write again tomorrow.Send a message
