DEVOTION: ... This is what the Lord has commanded. If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. Numbers 30:1b-2
There is an organization in Massachusetts called the Brookline Political Action for Peace.
I'm not entirely sure why they tacked the words "for peace" onto their name since their agenda is probably going to bring about a lot of things, and peace isn't likely to be one of them.
And what is the agenda of the Brookline Political Action for Peace (BPAFP)? It's simply this: they want the city's town meeting to urge the local school committee to stop requiring principals to have the Pledge of Allegiance recited during morning announcements.
According to the BPAFP, the pledge has
1. no educational value, and is
2. a loyalty oath reminiscent of McCarthyism or some horrific totalitarian regimes, and is
3. at odds with America's most important traditions.
Wow! All those bad things in that short little Pledge of Allegiance.
The next thing you know, somebody is going to take a shot at hot dogs, apple pie and motherhood. After all, hot dogs have chemicals, and apple pie is fattening and motherhood is ... well, I can't think of anything negative to say about motherhood.
Understand, I'm not a believer in the idea of "my country, right or wrong, my country." On the other hand, I believe -- and the Lord suggests -- that there are principles and higher callings to which a person can and probably ought to align himself.
Even Jesus, as He began His last hours of suffering for our redemption, committed Himself to a higher duty than His own personal preference when He prayed ... "not My will, but Thy will be done" (Luke 22:42b).
Please understand, I'm not ignoring the words of James who said our "yes" or "no" ought to be sufficient. I am saying the Lord recognizes the prayerful promises of His faithful people, and so does our nation.
And if pledging faithfulness to a nation which is under God is a bad thing for our country's children, I feel sorry for them and the nation, which is just my way of saying ...
old Ben Franklin was right when he said, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."
And that's true for church, as well as country.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in this life there are things which ought to command respect and loyalty, things to which a person should be aligned. May our children find -- under Your guidance -- that this nation is worthy of their allegiance. This I ask in the Savior's Name. I'm sorry I have not posted in a couple of weeks. Time seems to have just flown by. A combination of computer glitches, family dynamics, and new routines have kept me from posting like I had in the past. All that behind me, I will try to do a better job keeping everyone upt-to-date. We are now settled into a Marriott Property and have a base-camp to call our own. I think there were several people who had offered us Marriott points at one time. The hotel we stayed at originally would not accpet Marriotte points, so I did not record those offer like I should have. But this one does! So if you have any points we can use, that would be greatly appreciated.
Jonas has another round of chemo behind him and gets admitted on Thursday for three days for the next round. He has made it between every round of chemo here without going into the hospital for infection or neutropenia. Today was the first time that he needed a blood transfusion since we have been here, but he took it like a champ in an outpatient setting.
The doctor did explain to me recently that with cancers that are treated over this long a period of time, patients can expect to have many, many transfusions. They really like to keep those to an absolute minimum because the body can start to reject the new blood: something we do not want to happen. So far we have had NO adverse reactions. Smooth sailing.
Along with our chemo schedule, Jonas has had various other appointments with specialists. Most recently he had a five-hour psych test to evaluate his knowledge, logic, recall, etc.. The radiation that he is about to get may have an impact on his brain function and they want to be able to have a baseline to compare it to. His facilitator says that he is operating at high-level of skill which is a great way to start out, if there is any possibility of impairment. I am not terribly worried about this possibility. We have met two patients in the pediatric clinic who have undergone proton therapy in and around the brain. Both of them have had extremely uneventful episodes with the PT. No discomfort. No new side affects. No brain damage. I anticipate that we will find it to be the same.
Jonas has had several packages delivered to him since we arrived, containing dozens and dozens of letter from his classmates at school!!!! Wow. You can't believe what that does for this guys spirit. The first two he opened happened to be from kids he knew: Emily Tilotson and John Hogan. He was so jazzed, he just tore through the next dozen or so saying, "I don't even know most of these kids and they are writing to me anyway. Aw that is so nice!" He was really impressed by some of the artwork the kids drew for him, Shae Buffington and Sheldon, great stuff. Alyssa and Bobbie Nesselroad, Jonas says hello and thanks. He misses you too. Mr. Eaton, Jonas says, Hi.hi.hi.hi.....and then keeps laughing. He thought that card was a hoot!! We have several of them sitting out on the table for decoration and I plan to put some up on the wall. Whenever we have some down time he just rereads them and they really perk him up. I understand that more are coming, and he is really looking forward to that.
This past weekend, Joel came to visit for his birthday. 55! Saturday, the three of us drove down to Galveston (which wasn't even an hour's drive) to see the ocean. It was a lovely day. We walked the Strand, which is the main street of the old downtown, had ice cream at La King (an amazing old-fashioned candy shop), and watched a movie about the hurricane in 1900 that killed over 2500 people in Galeveston. We also went to Stewart Park and walked the beach looking for pebbles and shells. Jonas was a bit disappointed. He wanted so badly to play in the surf but he can't fully submerge because of his G-tube. We did get some fun pictures and I will try to post them tomorrow. It was a wonderful day and a great weekend.
I owe a big thank you to my Uncle Chuck who sent me a Forwarded Email about pharmacies. This article was about how we get scammed not only by insurance companies, but also by pharmacies. Some pharmacies mark up their drug prices (even generic) by as much as 1500% --which is why Walgreens can afford to put up a building every 10 miles. As it turns out, the article said, Costco has remarkable policy compared to all other pharmacies....they just don't do that mark up thing. And it is not just for their "members". ANYONE can get prescriptions filled at Costco. At least that is what the article said. (In our family we do that forwarding thing a lot. So I checked the information validity on Snopes.com which verified this as TRUE. Then I went to the Costco website myself to see if I could get pricing details on Jonas' meds.) As it turns out, this article was right on the money!!! I couldn't get the website to give me prices on ALL his meds, but one of them that I pay $630 for at the hospital pharmacy, I can get for $67! Same strength and same number of pills!!! I tell you this because when I find a money saver this big I think EVERYONE should know about it. I feel bad that I haven't price shopped pharmacies. I simply thought they were all the same. I don't know if there are others somewhere this low, but I don't think I have to look any further. Simply amazing. Thank you again, Uncle Chuck. If all of Jonas' other medications are that low, you litteraly saved us thousands and thousands of dollars. Knowledge is power.
I'm off to bed now, but wanted you all to know....

DEVOTION: For My people are foolish; they know Me not; they are stupid children; they have no understanding. They are 'wise' -- in doing evil! But how to do good they know not. Jeremiah 4:22
Using the prophet Jeremiah as His spokesman, God looked at His sinful, rebellious people and said they were "'wise' in doing evil."
It appears the children of Israel had a head start on a man from D'leberville, Mississippi.
The UPI reports that employees from the Winn Dixie store in that town reported Nathan Hardy to the police. They said they were sure he was shoplifting from the store.
He was.
When the police showed up, Hardy made a run for it. He ran, but he tripped and was arrested. Only when he was in their custody did the police discover the magnitude of the man's crimes. In case you haven't read the story, I'll tell you what Hardy took.
Hardy took two live lobsters. This he did by stuffing them into the front pockets of his shorts. Then Hardy, not yet satisfied, took some bags of shrimp and a pork loin. These he placed into the waistband of his shorts.
It was a crime which was wrong on any number of different levels.
Let us merely say that Nathan Hardy has not shown himself to be one of the folks who are 'wise' in doing evil.
Of course, from God's perspective, all evil doing is unwise. It was unwise when Adam and Eve took the forbidden fruit. Since they had no shorts to hide what they were doing, they ate that fruit on the spot and brought death and damnation upon the world.
Not very wise, was it?
Nor are the sins we commit. We can't hide them; we can't get rid of them; we can't save ourselves from them.
So that we might be rescued, the Heavenly Father sent His Son into this world. In an unprecedented act of grace, the Lord gave His only-Begotten so we unwise sinners can be forgiven and adopted into the family of faith.
It is my prayer you know those truths already ... and that you are not one of the foolish who reject the Savior and depend upon your own wisdom in getting by without Him.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, unwise Nathan has ended up in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center. That place may be a bad one, but it is a palace compared to the place the unwise, unsaved sinners of this world are going to. Before it is too late -- and while they yet have time -- I pray they may see that true wisdom comes in acknowledging Jesus is their Savior. In His Name I pray. Amen.

DEVOTION: If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be feared. Psalm 130:3-4
Compared to our national debt, 65,000 isn't a very big number.
On the other hand, when you realize that a 42-year-old woman from Rotterdam called her ex-boyfriend that many times in one year, well, that's a lot.
My calculations say that would be almost eight phone calls an hour, 24 hours a day, every day for an entire year. When the lady was arrested for being a stalker, she said, "He and I have a relationship and I don't think that number of calls is excessive."
He says they don't have a relationship.
But back to that 65,000 number.
I imagine the fellow being called probably didn't mind when his phone rang the first few times. But when the day's number hit ten -- or 50 -- I think he might have been peeved. By the time the phone had gone off the 170th time he was probably frustrated beyond belief. It is impossible for me to imagine how he must have felt in the seventh or eighth month of the woman's barrage.
All of this got me wondering.
How many times a day do you think the Lord forgives our sins? Now I know there are times when we are pretty good -- usually when we're sleeping or under an anesthetic. On the other hand, our waking hours probably more than make up for our short breaks from transgressing.
How many times a day do we sin? How many times a day does the Lord forgive? I don't know the number, but it's a lot.
This is why the passage from the book of Psalms is so very significant. Living in the grace of God which comes from the Messiah, the psalmist is confident the Lord doesn't mark our iniquities. The Lord isn't making a list, checking it twice, trying to find out who's naughty or nice.
He already knows: we're all naughty.
No, the Lord -- because of the forgiveness won for us upon Calvary's cross -- doesn't keep a record of iniquities. Because of Jesus' sacrifice, He forgives.
He forgives a lot ... and because He does we can stand before Him innocent.

Compared to our national debt, 65,000 isn't a very big number.
On the other hand, when you realize that a 42-year-old woman from Rotterdam called her ex-boyfriend that many times in one year, well, that's a lot.
My calculations say that would be almost eight phone calls an hour, 24 hours a day, every day for an entire year. When the lady was arrested for being a stalker, she said, "He and I have a relationship and I don't think that number of calls is excessive."
He says they don't have a relationship.
But back to that 65,000 number.
I imagine the fellow being called probably didn't mind when his phone rang the first few times. But when the day's number hit ten -- or 50 -- I think he might have been peeved. By the time the phone had gone off the 170th time he was probably frustrated beyond belief. It is impossible for me to imagine how he must have felt in the seventh or eighth month of the woman's barrage.
All of this got me wondering.
How many times a day do you think the Lord forgives our sins? Now I know there are times when we are pretty good -- usually when we're sleeping or under an anesthetic. On the other hand, our waking hours probably more than make up for our short breaks from transgressing.
How many times a day do we sin? How many times a day does the Lord forgive? I don't know the number, but it's a lot.
This is why the passage from the book of Psalms is so very significant. Living in the grace of God which comes from the Messiah, the psalmist is confident the Lord doesn't mark our iniquities. The Lord isn't making a list, checking it twice, trying to find out who's naughty or nice.
He already knows: we're all naughty.
No, the Lord -- because of the forgiveness won for us upon Calvary's cross -- doesn't keep a record of iniquities. Because of Jesus' sacrifice, He forgives.
He forgives a lot ... and because He does we can stand before Him innocent.

According to the U.S. Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office, that's the number of Americans who fought and defended their nation in World War II, Korea, the Cold War, and Vietnam who remain unaccounted for. How do we remember them? By taking time to reflect on their sacrifice.
In honor of the national POW/MIA Recognition Day that is observed tomorrow, Sept. 16, I'd like to focus on a single story of enduring courage and selflessness.
U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Robinson "Robbie" Risner had plenty of combat experience under his belt when he arrived in Vietnam. But his life changed dramatically on Sept. 16, 1965. While flying his F-105D Thunderchief fighter-bomber on a mission over North Vietnam, Risner was shot down, captured and taken to Hoa Lo Prison, otherwise known as the "Hanoi Hilton."
As we have learned since the Vietnam War ended, POWs were subjected to cruel, inhumane treatment and torture. Here's how Risner described one of those experiences:
"During the night, I heard someone screaming in a distance. And I thought, man, they are torturing another prisoner. I felt so sorry for him, you know. And then I would come back more closely to consciousness and found that it was me I was hearing in the distance. I was the one that was doing the screaming. And they tortured me all night."
While most of us can't imagine what that was like or how a human being can survive such conditions, Risner and his men found a way. They communicated to one another by tapping on the prison walls and frequently paid the price when they were caught. When Risner and his companions held an unauthorized church service in their prison cell, guards escorted them to solitary confinement. While they were walking out, the men of Camp Unity, as it later became known, sang "The Star Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America." Risner was later quoted as saying that he felt nine feet tall during those moments. After serving seven years as a POW, Robbie Risner was released on Feb. 12, 1973, and returned with honor to the United States as part of Operation Homecoming.
Will you join me tomorrow in offering a moment of silence for those 83,581 who are still lost, but not forgotten?

The first two that sign up get the spots!!! the only thing is that he is not staying Saturday night, so you would have to go home with him Saturday evening.
