Posted 8 minutes agoToday, Jonas is back at home! He was released from the hospital yesterday after making through another round of chemo. I have to say what a tough guy he is about it all. I am so proud of him. He is determined to beat this thing no matter what challenge get put in front of him --and he has had some tough stuff so far! He is learning what it takes to get through the treatment week by week:
-The first week in the hospital he had to battle excruciating pain.
-The second week, surgeries, blood, poking, prodding,and more pain.
-The following week, gut-wrenching chemo chemicals.
-Last week, vomitting, mouth sores, hair loss, weight loss.
-This past week, mental and emotioanl stress.
Now that the pain is managed with medicine and the chemo seems to be beating down this tumor his mind is free to play the "Why did this happen to me?" card. He does not let that question get the better of him, but it is nevertheless a real hurdle to get past, and it will probably never go away. His days in the hospital are the hardest for him to bear. I will do a better job of keeping you posted to his inpatient dates and see if we can't keep him with a slow trickle of friends to keep his spirits up. After all, that is the only thing that really makes him happy - Visiting with friends and plans for the future. As I understand it, that attitude -- having things to look forward to -- can make or break him in his battle against cancer.
Tomorrow morning Jonas, Joel and I are flying a commercial flight to Houston, Texas where Jonas will be evaluated by Dr. Hughes. You can read more about him at this website -- (copy and paste)

Our plan is to be evaluated on the 11th and return home on the 12th, barring any unforseen obstacles (or for that matter, upgraded treatment plan they may have to offer). You can read more about MD Anderson's proton therapy at the following website-- (copy and paste)

Finally, I want to say some wonderful things about Joel. He is the one keeping our family going. He is self-employed and has no employees. That means he has no sick days, vacation time and no one to pass the job off to. It is a good thing that he is a control freak, because his skills are being pushed to the limit every day. Truth-be-told, I'm a stay-at-home mom who is frazzled beyond belief, wanting only to stay at my son's bedside to attend to his every need. In the last month and a half I have accomplished nothing. Joel not only works his job, but comes home to tend to our swimming pool, our vehicles, the laundry, and all the other household chores I have let slip through the cracks. Brette is picking up the slack with Blaire and other light duties, but Joel is the one carrying all the weight. All this while spending every night at the hospital. I don't know how he does it. I appreciate him and love him for all he is doing to get us through this difficult time.
