No evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:10-11 There is a Scotch prayer that reads, "From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties and things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us!" It is a good, albeit incomplete, prayer. You will notice it does not mention sports utility vehicles. The prayer would indeed include such an addition if Richard Clemons of Cockrell Hill, Texas, has his way. You see, last week a stolen SUV, piloted by a 14-year-old thief, crashed through the brick wall of Clemons' apartment and ended up in his bedroom. Clemons should have been a goner. He wasn't. Why? Clemons' nephew was visiting from Mississippi, and the youngster had fallen asleep in the living room recliner. Rather than have the boy wake up alone in a strange location, Clemons decided to sleep on the floor next to the chair. As Clemons said, "That's what saved my life." Which is where I have to beg to differ with him. Clemons' life was spared because God's was watching over and preserving him. It's true. The same Lord who sent His Son to seek and save the lost, who gave His Only-Begotten as a sacrifice for sinful humanity, was keeping an eye on Clemons. Just like He keeps an eye on you. Think about it. How many of you have had an SUV crash into your home? Is that because everyone who lives near you is an excellent driver who would never drink and get behind the wheel? Are there no 14-year-old car thieves near you? The fact you have not experienced an SUV joining you in your bed is due to God's protection. Understand, God's umbrella of defense is good not just against SUVs. It works on hijacked jets, lions escaped from the circus, runaway trains, and trucks transporting dangerous chemicals. Now if you think my point is a silly one, please know it's not meant to be. God loves you and He loves you dearly. He sees the multitude -- the myriad of tragedies and difficulties that could come your way, which the forces of evil would love to send your way. But God doesn't let those things get near your door and, according to the Psalmist, He keeps plagues away from your tents. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for the sacrificing Savior, we most certainly give thanks. But we also wish to express our belated gratitude for the many long-leggedy beasties which never touch or hurt us. For all You have ever done, our gratitude. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

The ninth annual T-3 Men's Retreat is set for Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, 2011. This promises to be another great experience for the men of St John's and other Lutheran congregations in the St. Charles area. In fact, men from all over the metro area have joined this special time in the past. Men 18 years of age or older are eligible and they need not be Lutheran to attend. The retreat will be held at Mark Twain State Park at the Si Coburn Group Camp. This is a beautiful setting for a weekend of adventure and growth. The theme of this year's retreat is "Respectable Sins" and the study times during the retreat will be spent exploring the areas of our lives where we have come to accept less than God might want from us.
The retreat will feature great food and a lot of activities A scramble golf tournament, fishing tournament, trap and skeet shooting competition, and euchre tournament all take place on Saturday morning. If none of these interest you, you may choose to spend time reading, hiking , biking, site seeing, or napping. Prizes are awarded to tournament winners at dinner on Saturday evening. Campfires on Friday and Saturday nights provide the opportunity to get to know others better under the stars. Music is a big part of the camp experience and you will enjoy hearing and singing familiar songs with the 100+ men who typically attend. The culminating worship service on Sunday morning is a special time of praising God for all His gifts to us and a great way to prepare us to return to our homes and lives.
The cost of the retreat is only $42 and this includes meals and a commemorative tee-shirt. Attendees have the option of staying in group cabins or tent camping on the grounds at no additional charge. You can even arrange to stay in a local motel near the camp at reduced rates if you like.
A brochure with all information and a registration form will be available soon in the narthex. You can also register online at www.t3mensretreat.org using PayPal. It is really easy and you can see pictures of the camp and facilities there, too.
This is the year for you to go to the T-3 (trap-tackle-tees) Retreat. Sign up, meet new friends, bring old friends, and join in the fun of growing your faith. For more information, contact Don Hugo at Zion –636 441-7425 ext 246 or home 636 441-9954.

The LORD said) "... I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. To whom will you compare Me or count Me equal? ..." Isaiah 46:4b-5a
Just last month I took a minor risk and set up a small business.
Unlike any other thing I have ever attempted, I was confident I could make this work. I knew it because my product was in an area I knew and understood. Even more, when I started, I was fully confident I had the right number of clientele to make this endeavor successful. I had the necessary contacts and I was guaranteed success in this just because I was the one doing it!
Have you noticed the frequency of "I" in all that? I certainly didn't.
At least not until the very first week of work when things I was depending on failed to pan out and people I was counting on disappointed me.
To say I was anxious is to put it mildly. I was on the verge of depression. I had been so sure of immediate success that I felt like God had failed me. The prayer I addressed to Him was not a pleasant one. That's when I realized: not once in my frantic rush to get going had I considered bringing the matter before God. I hadn't paused to reflect in prayer. Indeed, I barely had time for my regular times with God.
Once I realized I had only come to God to accuse and to complain, I had to sit down and re-evaluate my approach to life's challenges.
Is God only the God of my troubles? Can He not also take credit for my successes and play a role in my plans and ambitions?
Can I not trust God to make things right even before they go wrong? Indeed, do I do us both a disservice by depending on me when the Triune God desires to be my rock and my shelter, the provider of all my needs? After all, we only need to look at His Son in Bethlehem's manger, on Calvary's cross and at the empty tomb to see His willingness to do what is necessary for us.
By His grace, my elementary business endeavor has been a time of insight and spiritual development much beyond anything I could have hoped to gain from this experience.
God does not only rescue me in times of trouble, but He also sustains every day. He is willing to carry me, with all my burdens, trials, tribulation, joys and successes. To whom, then, can I compare Him?
He will carry you as well.
THE PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to know You are able to carry us with all our burdens, trials, tribulations, joys and successes. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 Recently, one of our Daily Devotions caused a number of our readers to respond with stories from their past. One of the sweetest was this which was shared by Jeanette Eaton. We thank her for letting us see this vignette of a Christian household. It was a blessing to me as I pray it will be to you. Pastor Klaus Every once in a while one of the Daily Devotion listeners shares a story with me that is worth repeating. One such story came from Jeanette Eaton. Eaton shares how years ago her mother baked a cake (chocolate, of course) for a church picnic the family was to attend. As Eaton went out the back door, she saw the cake and gave it a test. She put her finger in it and, well, this is how she told me: "I went ahead and put my finger in it. And oh so good, but I wasn't smart enough to cover it up, and I just went on outside." "Later, of course, my mother was displeased. Mom was displeased, but it was daddy who lined us up and asked, 'Who did it?' Of course, nobody confessed. Daddy took each of us into the kitchen, saving me for last because I was the oldest. When he took me to the kitchen, he put my finger in the hole. Just as a leopard can't change its spots, a third-grader can't change her finger size. I had been discovered and was rightly punished. "But I learned something that day. And, even though I did my share of more bad things, I never told my daddy another lie. Daddy knew that. I'm glad he did. That's because later when I was confronted and accused of lying, my daddy just said, 'She may be guilty of a lot of things, but she's not a liar.'" Now there are a lot of ways I could use Eaton's story. Allow me to say this. Each day you and I commit many sins. Each day the Lord discovers us in those sins and because of His Son's sacrifice forgives us of them. In these things our story is like Eaton's. But I wonder how many of us can say, "I learned something that day"? I wonder how many of us can confess, "I never did that sin again"? It would be a good thing if we did. You see, repentance is not just being sorry for what we've done in the past; it's striving not to repeat the sin in the future. It's the second part of repentance that's hard; it's the second part I'm going to have to work at. And I invite you to join me in trying. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I truly am sorry for my sins. Now I pray that my faith may be of a quality that I am sorry enough to leave behind those sins and habits of which I am repentant. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1 The young girls wanted to earn enough money so they could go to the local water park. To that end they built a lemonade stand and began their first foray into the business world. It didn't take too long before they found out how cruel that world can be. They had only been established for a short period of time before the police stopped by and spoke to them about some things they might have forgotten. You know, things like a business license and a food and vendor's permit. It was the end of their business. Excuse me; it should have been the end of their business. When the girls' story went on the air, people started to talk about how they might help. The biggest and bestest offer came from the employees at Calypso Lemonade, one of the nation's largest lemonade-flavor companies. Those folks at Calypso banded together on behalf of their mini-competitors and contributed enough to pick up the girls' permits, their licenses and give them a summer's worth of product to sell. Using a word used by the apostle John, the girls had found an "advocate" in the personnel of Calypso. That is, they found someone who could help them, someone who would run interference for them, someone who could make things happen when they were helpless -- someone who could bring their dead business back to life. Now I probably could stop this devotion right here. You know what I'm going to say, don't you? In Jesus, our Advocate has found us. By God's grace Jesus is Someone who will help us, Someone who has and continues to run interference for us, Someone who rescues the damned, Someone who finds the lost, Someone who .... Jesus has -- through His life, His death, His resurrection -- done all we sinners could not do for ourselves. He has done it all, and that is more than we could have expected. It is more than enough. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks for my Advocate, Jesus. When I have been helpless, lost, doomed and damned, He has taken my place and conquered. Now His victory has been given to me. May I be forever appreciative of Jesus Christ, God's Son, my Savior and Advocate. Amen. .

And He (Jesus) said to His disciples, "Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come!" Luke 17:1 Ashley was offered a job opportunity that was too good to be true. That was what the sophisticated lady at the Wal-Mart in Harrisville, Utah, told her. The lady went on to explain she was a recruiter for a restaurant chain, and they were looking for someone like Ashley who would receive bonuses and become "manager material." Ashley said the job "looked good, sounded good," and the lady talking to her was "really, really nice." That's why Ashley eagerly filled out the application. She gladly shared detailed information about herself. She gave her full name; she wrote down past work experiences, and she shared the names, numbers and addresses of other friends. When they asked Ashley for the particulars concerning her bank account, she never hesitated. After all, she had been told the money coming to her as a future supervisor would soon be pouring in. The lady had told the truth. When Ashley checked her account, she was pleased to find some extra deposits had been made. It was only when that money disappeared and took with it the rest of her account that Ashley became truly concerned. She should have been concerned. She had just joined the growing ranks of people in Utah who had been bilked out of their hard-earned cash. It is hardly the first time such a thing has happened. Adam and Eve were bilked out of the Garden when they listened to an offer too good to be true. David found Bathsheba was too good to be true, as did Judas who betrayed his Master for 30 pieces of silver. If you look back at your life, maybe you can find such an incident -- a moment in time when you bought into a temptation that was too good to be true. If so, give thanks for your forgiving Savior. When we sin, He forgives. When we stumble, He picks us up. When we fall victim to an enticing temptation, He ransoms us through His blood upon the cross. Jesus is the one Person who is too good to be true but who is ... true, that is. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, temptations come to us and all too often we fall victim to them. We pray You will grant us a faith that will help us discern when the forces of evil are encouraging us to follow something that is really too good to be true. This I ask in the Savior's Name. Amen.

It's Time to start thinking about our MEN'S RETREAT!!The ninth annual T-3 Men's Retreat is set for Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, 2011.
