St. John's Group Email update on Jonas (Don Nolte's grandson)

Well, the first week of chemo is almost complete. The upset stomach and constipation have run their course and Jonas is feeling much better today. Whether it be real or perceived I don't care, but he feels that the pain in his face and head are diminishing a bit,too! That could be an indicator that the chemo is having an effect on the tumor---making it shrink .. or let go.. or has got it in a full-nelson,.. something! Yesterday afternoon he walked the halls again, worked with a physical therapist, and sat in a recliner for almost an hour. He watched a small portion of contraband video brought by one of his friends, even though tv normally still gives him a headache. All a good sign. At one point he thought he was getting some shadowy vision back in his left eye which turned out to be wishful thinking. This morning he confirmed that it is not at all so.

More great news. Jonas will be headed to MD Anderson in Texas earlier than expected. Originally, Children's Mercy had made arrangements to transfer him there if and when he reaches the surgical phase at the end of ALL his chemo treatments, which is almost 8 months down the line from now. However, as we looked more and more into the radiation phase, we learned something very interesting about MD Anederson. They offer a form of radiation that is not available here. It is called Proton Therapy. I need to research it more thoroughly, but I think I have a basic understanding of it, which is this. PT is equally as effective as basic radiation, but it is more advanced than basic radiation in that it more directly targets the cancer itself with less collateral damage to the surrounding structures. MD Anderson only accepts specific cases that are special needs for the location of thier tumor, and Jonas fits that criteria. Traditional radiation would be done by a machine that is placed up against Jonas' head (most likely the cheek and jaw area) and radiation is beamed through to target the tumor. Because of the location of Jonas' tumor there would most certainly be damage to his left eye, left ear,his jaw, his teeth, his tongue,his sinuses, his pituitary gland and even his brain. Proton Therapy would not eliminate (I don't think) the chance of all damage, but would drastically make a difference to the severity of damage to all those other features. If ever there was a case where PT should be used, this is it!
Sooooooooooooooo.... Looks like we might be in Houson just in time for Halloween.

Jonas got his Fight the Fight bracelets last night and LOVES them! He is sending most of them to grandparents and family out of state, but shared a few with some his favorite nurses, too. When I told him about the Pancake Breakfast and that some of his teachers were going to wait tables he didn't believe me, but ended up saying, "That's so cool... I wish I could go. " lol

He mentioned last night that this year he missed stings camp and robotics camp. Two of his favorite summer events. And asked me to double check with Mr. Morales about the chance to see the final concert on video. If you can go, the concert is today at 1:00 at Pleasant Lea Middle School. I heard there are LOTS of LS kids there this year. Should be awesome.

Jonas I have been thinking about you a lot and I was in Houston this past week and was near the MD Anderson building. It is huge! I took a picture of it and sent it to Lizzy and I believe your mom saw it too. The Proton building is pretty close to as well. You better start working on your best Texan impersonation!

You have all the right weapons to beat this! You have the strength of a pitcher and the mental toughness of a wrestler. With this combination this tumor doesn't stand a chance.

I should be in the KC area next week and I will come by for a visit.

Oh my goodness this is amazing news! I read these to my mom and we both just light up when these messages just get better and better. The news about getting to Texas earlier is very possibly the best news yet! Of course we are all waiting for the best news down the road :) When you make it to Texas we will have to keep in close contact because I will be in Texas this Christmas and I could definently make a stop by to see how everything is going and bring anything you need!! Hi Jonas, I wanted to let you know that my daughter Victoria who is going to be a senior at LSHS this coming year is in robotics. She loves being involved in such an neat group, I will tell her that you have an interest in robotics and we will keep you posted on the robot that will be built this year. It is always very neat to see students build a robot that completes a certain task at competition. Thinking of you today and praying for you to beat this!

Stacy said that we will be very happy.

She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children.

Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone.
We'll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people that live nearby for cocaine and ecstasy.

In the meantime we will pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so

Stacy can get better. She deserves it.

DEVOTION: ... I knew that You are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Jonah 4:2b

We live in a world of technology.

It is a world where on the products we buy we increasingly see labels which read, "NO USER SERVICABLE PARTS INSIDE." That is just another way of saying, "You don't have the tools, the smarts or the capability of fixing anything here, so if it breaks, bring it to the experts."

I can't be sure, but it may be an accumulated frustration with this technological society that caused western Arizona's Lauriano Lawrence Lovato to do what he did.

And what did he do?

On April 13th Lovato went out to his car, a Camaro. Now normally Camaros are good vehicles, but Lovato's Camaro wouldn't start. Lovato tried all the tricks he knew to make that car start, but it just wouldn't go. Frustrated, furious and angry, Lovato got out his gun. Maybe he just meant to threaten his Camaro into starting. Maybe he drew his gun with malice in mind. Either way, Lovato fired two shots through the windshield and into the dashboard of his vehicle.

For his action, Lovato has been given 90 days in jail. As for the Camaro, it's expected to live.

Now those of you who have been blessed with an even temper may expect me to condemn this man's angry actions. And I do. On the other hand, having had a lawn mower which gave me blisters before it would even start, I can certainly understand why Lovato got angry.

It is also why I give thanks to the Lord for being "slow to anger" and "abounding in steadfast love."

You see, most of us who compose the human race are pretty much like that non-starting Camaro and lawnmower. As St. Paul said "the things we ought to do, we don't." Day after day, year after year we sinners don't do as the Lord wishes.

And how does the Lord react to our ongoing disobedience?

Although He is just and punishes unforgiven sin, the Lord remains slow to anger. He has, in His steadfast love sent His Son into this world. Here Jesus lived His life fulfilling the commandments we had broken, resisting the temptations which have tripped us up. In short, He lived, died and rose so we might be saved.

Now, all who are given faith in the Savior know they have forgiveness for the wrong they have done and the good they have left undone. Along with that forgiveness they hold fast to the sure and certain promise that the day will come when the Lord will take His believing children to heaven.

It is not what Lovato would have done if he had been in control of the universe. It is not what I would have done. But it is what God did. It is what He did because He is gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, every day I sin much. For all that I have done wrong, I am sincerely sorry. With a repentant heart, I give thanks that You have been gracious to me and sent Your Son to live, die and rise for me. May I, this day, try to do better. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

The ninth annual T-3 Men's Retreat is set for Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, 2011. This promises to be another great experience for the men of St John's and other Lutheran congregations in the St. Charles area. In fact, men from all over the metro area have joined this special time in the past. Men 18 years of age or older are eligible and they need not be Lutheran to attend. The retreat will be held at Mark Twain State Park at the Si Coburn Group Camp. This is a beautiful setting for a weekend of adventure and growth. The theme of this year's retreat is "Respectable Sins" and the study times during the retreat will be spent exploring the areas of our lives where we have come to accept less than God might want from us.

The retreat will feature great food and a lot of activities A scramble golf tournament, fishing tournament, trap and skeet shooting competition, and euchre tournament all take place on Saturday morning. If none of these interest you, you may choose to spend time reading, hiking , biking, site seeing, or napping. Prizes are awarded to tournament winners at dinner on Saturday evening. Campfires on Friday and Saturday nights provide the opportunity to get to know others better under the stars. Music is a big part of the camp experience and you will enjoy hearing and singing familiar songs with the 100+ men who typically attend. The culminating worship service on Sunday morning is a special time of praising God for all His gifts to us and a great way to prepare us to return to our homes and lives.

The cost of the retreat is only $42 and this includes meals and a commemorative tee-shirt. Attendees have the option of staying in group cabins or tent camping on the grounds at no additional charge. You can even arrange to stay in a local motel near the camp at reduced rates if you like.

St. John's Group Email Update on Jonas: from Don Nolte

As it turns out, chemo treatment delivery is rather uneventful. Somehow I had pictured them taking him to the "chemo station" where they hooked him up to a frightening machine or a team of doctors entering his room, turning on bright lights and administering some grizzly technique of secrecy. But the nurse comes quietly into your room, just like when she adds any other medication to your course of treatment, explaines what she is doing, hangs the chemicals on the iv pole, and feeds them into your iv line. Done. As our doctor explained, Jonas will be taking 5 different chemo drugs. 3 one day, 2 two the next, 3, 2,3,2 for about a week. Then he will have about a week off. The first part of that second week is likely to be the worst. His white blood count and electrolytes and his immune system will all be out of whack and he will be at his weakest. The second part of that second week he will be on the upswing and starting to feel better.... and them bam. Just as he is starting to feel better, they start back to week one.
This is the reality of chemo. He will follow this routine for 6 cycles of chemo, roughly 12 weeks.

Cancer is a mass of rapidly dividing cells. The job of the chemo medicines is to seek out the rapidly dividing cells in his body and destroy them. That is why most people lose their hair during chemo. Hair is made up of rapidly dividing cells at its roots. So the chemo zaps it.  There are many kinds of chemo for different kinds of cancers and each one of them have their own side effects. Vomitting, severe constipation, hair loss, mouth sores, pain swallowing and digesting, more jaw pain. These are some of the things Jonas will have to endure. So far, he has been vomiting every 2 hours since Monday night when he began his treatment. He's a tough guy and has been a trooper about it. The real issue the nurses are vigilant about is keeping him regularly going to the bathroom. They don't want the chemicals to get backed up in his bladder or bowels. They can be trapped in there and damage or burn his insides causing more irritation and possibilities for infection.  The problem with trekking to the bathroom regularly is that getting up makes him dizzy, sick to his stomach, increases his headaches, and robs him of his sleep. They have some great pain and nausea medicines to help with these issues, but they have their own side effects as well. So you can see how one avenue of care plays on another. It is almost overwhelming. Last night, when he was so exhausted after throwing up, while I was cleaning around him, he called me back over to the bed, put his arms around me, held me close and said, "Mom, I hope you don't ever get cancer."   Ohhhh....my boy.

Jonas had a few exiting moments over the weekend that should pay off for him in the near future.

First, Audrey Lanier was able to get his skype account set up for him on his iPad!   Yay! He's not up to interfacing yet, but has told me he is looking forward to it,.

Second, Jeffery Burrow and Jacob Bullimore were able to get his xBox live up and running! You should have seen his face when he opened his eyes and saw the image on the TV. A smile came to his face and his hands rose up into the air as if he had a controller in them, thumbs at the ready! Half a dozen people in that quiet little room erupted with laughter. Unfortunately, he didn't have his headset at the time and will have to wait for healthier days now.

Finally, Jonas was treated on Sunday evening with a visit from State Representative Jeff Grisamore.  He came because he is a good friend of the disability community and he, himself lost a child to a rare childhood illness years ago. He met with Jonas and then sat down with us to tell us about the foundation he belongs to as well as several other non-profit organizations that help families and kids struck by rare illnesses. He was a wonderful resource and friendly, caring man.   Thank you to Amy Brockelmeyer for helping us to meet him.

DEVOTION: count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ. Philippians 3:8

You don't have to be a baseball fan to have heard the tragic story of 39-year-old Shannon Stone.

Since a few weeks have gone by since his fatal accident, let me share the details of his story. Stone, an 18-year veteran firefighter went to a Texas Ranger's baseball game with his son. Both father and son were big fans of the Rangers, and the father wished to give his son the supreme souvenir anybody can take home from a big-league game.

Stone wanted to give his son a ball that had been used in play.

That's why, when all-star outfielder Josh Hamilton tossed a ball into the stands, Stone reached for it. He put everything he had into that reach and he ended up falling to the concrete below. He died on the way to the hospital.

After the incident various people suggested that Stone had been drunk; he wasn't. Others tried to offer all kinds of excuses for -- and accusations against -- the father.

As for me, I understand. There are some things in life which demand you give your all. No, it may not mean you die trying to get a baseball, but there are some things -- not many, but some things -- which call for a person to commit everything he's got to achieving that goal.

I've stood on battlefields around the world and known that there people fought and bled and died for a cause in which they believed. They gave their all.

For years I've preached the story of the Savior who felt that the price of our redemption was worth the cost of His life. Jesus' entire life was spent giving His all.

I've read the words of St. Paul who felt it was a small thing to give up all he had been so he might receive the salvation won by the Savior. How does the apostle say it ... "I have suffered the loss of all things and count those things as being rubbish, so that I may have the Redeemer."

Paul was speaking for many people when he wrote those words.

He was speaking for anyone who has recognized the greatness of his sin and knows he is deserving of eternal punishment. He was speaking for all who have seen the Father above send His Son to take our sin and punishment upon Himself. He was talking about all who have received the blood-bought forgiveness which Jesus won upon the cross.

Paul was talking for all who knew they have been saved by grace alone.

I pray St. Paul was talking about you and me: people who give thanks the Savior gave His all for our salvation.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, for having lived, died and risen for my salvation, I give thanks. You offered everything You had so I might be forgiven and granted eternal life. Now may the Holy Spirit motivate me so my life may be spent praising and giving thanks to You. In Your Name I ask it. Amen.

Four full hook up campsites are reserved at Onandaga Cave State Park. Cost is $54.50 for a site for the two days.

Sunday the floating group will leave from Ozark Outdoors at 10am to do a five mile float which should take 3-5 hours. Cost to float in a canoe is $17.50 per person with two people per canoe. Rafts are $22 a person and tubes are $20.

On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."

The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?"

So God agreed......

On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span."

The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?"

And God agreed......

On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years."

The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?"

And God agreed again......

God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years."

But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"

"Okay," said God. "You asked for it."

So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family.. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

St. John's Group Email Prayer request from Don Nolte

Say a prayer of thanksgiving as the bone marrow tests came back cancer free. They will be starting the chemo treatments tonight. Pray for God's guidance of those making the decisions and Jonah's peace in the release of pain as the cancer is shrunk and destroyed. I really do know God is answering the prayers all of you are rendering and I am thanking you for you fervent petitions on Jonas's behalf. Let's keep them going.

St. John's Group Email Prayer Request

From Sandy Robine:

Please add this precious little girl to the prayers first thing on Tuesday. This email from her grandma telling me of little Anna's condition and why the need for the surgery.

I've also added a picture of Anna. In the attached picture, she is in the "pink" slacks.

Anna had blood tests and chest x-ray today. She didn't even cry with the blood test, because Gracie told her that she didn't cry when she had hers a few months ago. ;-) Thank you, God and Gracie. Anna said that she got to pick the smell of "strawberries" for the mask when they put her to sleep for surgery. The doctors and nurses were very nice. She is scheduled at 12:30PM. They are replacing a man-made pulmonary valve that is no longer working and are replacing it with an adult cadaver's pulmonary valve. The was born with Tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve; ventricular septal defect or VSD. They thought she would be Down Syndrome, too. Regardless, it was discovered when she was 19 weeks old in the womb. Thankfully, with finding all this out before birth, they were prepared and had a helicopter waiting to take her immediately to St. Louis Children's Hospital. God gave us a live, healthy baby, and allowed 5 weeks of growth before the first surgery. At that time, she was on the heart / lung machine, with her heart out of her body. Chances of survival weren't promised, but our miracle baby recovered well. I have photos of her in the ICU. Doesn't look real. Anyway, she'll need more surgery when she's in her 20's or 30's, but it's a true miracle that they saved her at birth and that she's done this well without having the first pulmonary valve working for some time now. Her right side of the heart is enlarged, but they hope this will disappear or improve once she has healed and circulation, blood flow, etc., mimics a more normal circumstance. So, that's it. Today went well. I have faith that surgery will, too, but I am just praying that she is not in a lot of pain or experiences fear. They said they will give her something to "calm" her once she arrives. Thank you, God. She's NPO after midnight. They will have her at Children's by 10:30am. We will be there around 11am. DEVOTION: Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright. Proverbs 14:9 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13

What does true confession and repentance look like?

The Pharisees were coming to John the Baptist to be baptized by him, but he said to them. "You brood of vipers. Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance."

What does that "Fruit" look like? Is it not a willingness to make amends, to do what is right for and to the person you have hurt or offended? Is it not a willingness to do whatever it takes and whatever you are able to do for the sake of the other person?

What about when you hurt and offend God? What does that "fruit" look like?

Truth is that you can see true sorrow and contrition in a person by what they are willing to do and how far they are willing to go for the person they have offended.

Do the people you have hurt or offended lately know that you are truly sorrowful for what you have done or said? Are you truly sorry? Show them by your loving actions and words towards them. Don't just say your sorry, show that you truly mean it.

Prayer: Lord God, help me to be truly contrite ove rmy sin against others and against you. Help me to show it by my actions and words so that others may see my humility and that I may give all glory and honor to you. Amen.

Four full hook up campsites are reserved at Onandaga Cave State Park. Cost is $54.50 for a site for the two days.

Saturday will be on your own: Please check your newsletter for all of the fun stuff there is to do.

Sunday the floating group will leave from Ozark Outdoors at 10am to do a five mile float which should take 3-5 hours. Cost to float in a canoe is $17.50 per person with two people per canoe. Rafts are $22 a person and tubes are $20.

DEVOTION:

Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work." John 4:34

Did you ever get a letter asking you to report for jury duty? If so, what was your reaction?

From what I've been able to find out, most (but certainly not all) folks immediately begin thinking of an excuse that will allow them to be released from serving.

For example, one lady told a Chicago judge she had four tickets to one of Oprah's last tapings before the program went off the air. (The judge excused her from serving.)

Now there are good excuses for not being on a jury. Michael Wylie had such an excuse. It was a number of years ago that he was sent the letter to report. Wylie ignored the letter. A few more letters went out, but still he didn't respond. Since ignoring a jury duty letter is a criminal act in Massachusetts, officials filed documents against Mr. Wylie.

But, as I say, Mr. Wylie had a good excuse. That excuse was Mr. Wylie was dead. In fact he died shortly after the first letter had been sent out. Unfortunately nobody bothered to check. According to the state's deputy jury commissioner, the criminal complaint against Mr. Wylie will be removed.

Obviously most folks don't have as ironclad an excuse from jury duty as did Mr. Wylie. Most of us just find serving on jury duty to be an inconvenience. We feel that serving on jury duty gets in the way of our plans and upsets our routine.

"So what's the point?" you ask.

The point is this: yesterday I thumbed my way through Scripture looking for the excuse Jesus gave when He was asked to go to earth to redeem lost humankind.

You know what? I didn't find one.

This surprised me. After all, Jesus was being asked to give His life, and not just a few hours or weeks. More than that, Jesus wasn't being asked to judge our innocence or guilt; He was being asked to take our place on death row. And as far as being inconvenient ...

nothing can be more inconvenient than dying on a cross for someone else.

Look as long as you want. You will never find Jesus making up an excuse to get out of being our Savior.

On the contrary, what you will hear Him say is this: "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work."

Thank God for such loving grace.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, I give thanks You are the Savior and I am the redeemed. You gave when I would not; You sacrificed when I would not; You lived and died for someone else, which I would not. Grant me the grace to acknowledge Your sacrifice that You have shared with me. In Your Name. Amen.

My grandson, Jonas, had a full body scan on Tuesday and found no other tumors. Wednesday he had a pet scan(vital organs),a spinal tap, and a bone marrow sample taken. The results of these tests will not be know for at least 48 hours. I am going to K.C. today or tomorrow with one of my daughters so will probably know more when I get back. Keep Jonas in your prayers.
