DEVOTION: Luke 9:51-62English Standard Version (ESV)
"A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus"
51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"[a] 55 But he turned and rebuked them.[b] 56 And they went on to another village.
"The Cost of Following Jesus"
57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." 58 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." 59 To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." 60 And Jesus[c] said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." 61 Yet another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home." 62 Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
Lots of harsh things going on in this passage. Life was harsh for Jesus, especially as he set his face toward Jerusalem. Once he did that, it was all business. It was all business, because that's what He had truly come to do. His face was set toward Jerusalem, because that is where he would suffer and die for the sins of the world. It would be where he would feel the whips, the crown of thorns, the beating so bad that people couldn't recognize him, the nails in his hands and feet, and finally where he would take his last breath. It wasn't a fun trip.
Notice how it says that many rejected him, and many quit following him. It still happens in our day. It is most certainly happening in our United States, in our society. In place of God's Word, people want tolerance and acceptance. In place of confession and absolution, people want acceptance and even recognition and pride in all things sinful. The people rejected Jesus once he stopped giving them what they wanted and turned his face toward to Jerusalem to give them what they needed.
My prayer for you is that you set your face toward Jerusalem with Jesus so that you may see what the Lord's will is no matter how opposed the world is to it. Stand firm in God's Word! Speak the truth in love! Keep preaching, teaching, and living love ad forgiveness. Live in Christ and know that your reward awaits you in paradise!
Prayer: Lord, make me to know your will, to surrender to it, and to live in it. Amen.

"Give Thanks to the Lord" Of David.
138 I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
before the gods I sing your praise;
2 I bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
your name and your word.[a]
3 On the day I called, you answered me;
my strength of soul you increased.[b]
4 All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,
for they have heard the words of your mouth,
5 and they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
for great is the glory of the Lord.
6 For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
but the haughty he knows from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and your right hand delivers me.
8 The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands.
Lately I've been a lot more interested in the life of David, especially his life after Nathan convicted him and he confessed of his sin with Bathsheba. After this, and because of his grievous sins, the son born to Bathsheba died and all of his other sons fought against him and most of them died gruesome deaths by the sword. Not only that, but there were nations who were constantly trying to get at him and his kingdom, and so he was constantly fighting battles and shedding blood. Talk about stress.... , and he deserved it.
Still, in the middle of all that trouble and stress, and even after his failures and guilt, he is able to say,
"7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and your right hand delivers me."
He knew exactly who it was that upheld his life. He knew where his bread was buttered, where his breath came from, and where he was going to get mercy and grace. And so he was able to praise God even in the midst of the most difficult of circumstances. He was able to keep the faith, because the Holy Spirit kept reviving him and strengthening him.
What about you? Can you praise God in the middle of your struggles? Can you see past the pain to the praise? Can your ears and your heart hear God's Word and receive it with thankfulness even when you are going through difficult times?
My prayer for you is that you can take those difficult times in your lives and kick them in the teeth with the blessings of Christ, namely forgiveness, peace, and salvation. My prayer is that you can look back on those difficult times with thanksgiving and joy as times that the Lord grew your faith and sanctified you in both body and soul. My prayer for you and for myself is that we all become a little more like David every day, realizing how poor and wretched sinners we are, and knowing how much God has forgiven us.
Prayer: Lord, when hard times get us down, remind us that you are there and that all the blessings we receive in those difficult times come from you. Amen.

DEVOTION: Luke 8:26-39 English Standard Version (ESV)
"Jesus Heals a Man with Demons"
26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes,[a] which is opposite Galilee. 27 When Jesus[b] had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me." 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.) 30 Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion," for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed[c] man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
There are a lot of people in this world who deny that there are such things as demons in the world. There are also a lot of people who think that we, as mere human beings, can overcome evil all by ourselves in this world. Everyone seems to be looking for answers as to how to "deal" with terrorists, tragedies, and crazy lunatics such as the guy who killed the 49 people in Orlando.
Unless you don't believe the Scriptures, the account from the Gospel reading for this weekend shows us that there is indeed a very large presence of demons in our fallen, sinful world. And there is only one who can overcome and make the demons flee, in this account into a herd of pigs, away from us. This one person is, of course, God made flesh, JESUS!!
The one and ONLY way to "deal" with sin, death, the devil (and his demons), and hell is to give it all to Jesus! He already dealt with it all by allowing Himself to be nailed on a cross to rid the world of all of its power. He has commanded the sin and death to come out of you just like He commanded the demons to come out of the man from the Gerasenes.
If you want to "deal" with evil in your own life, there's only one choice. Give it to Jesus. He will give you the tools, His Word, His sacraments, His forgiveness to deal with it all, both the sin around you and your own sin. Trust in Jesus, live your life in Him, and have real peace!
Prayer: Lord, help me to "deal" with the sin, death, the devil and hell that is all around me by constantly turning to you. Amen.
