DEVOTION: Luke 4:31-44 English Standard Version (ESV)
31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 "Ha![a] What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God." 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!" 37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose." 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Jesus is so powerful that even the demons and even Peter's mother-in-law's  fever submitted to his voice.  Yet, those things are not why he came.  Yes, he cast out demons, and yes he was able to heal any and every disease, but he came for a greater purpose!  He came to proclaim and to be the good news that the people truly needed.  He came not just to save their mortal earthly bodies, but even more, to save their souls.

He did all of this without lifting a finger.  he did it with His very Word.  Those very Words, from that very mouth were the same Words that created the world and everything in it.  Those are the very Words that gave the Ten Commandments to Moses.

His Word has power to cast out demons, heal diseases, and raise the dead!  Imagine the power it can and should and does have in your life!  Let God's Word work its power in you today that you may have Real life and Real peace.

Prayer: Lord, make your Word have its way with me today.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  1 Corinthians 12:31b-13:13 (ESV)

And I will show you a still more excellent way.

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;[b] it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

The most excellent way is the way of love.  What does REAL LOVE look like?  In short, It looks like Jesus.

Jesus forgave his enemies, in fact, he forgave everyone, unconditionally, out of LOVE!

He called people out when they were sinning.  He didn't let them ruin their lives with their sin.  he brought them to their knees in repentance so that they would get out of their sins and be saved.

He suffered all things,  including hell itself, so that we wouldn't have to suffer it for all eternity, all out of LOVE!!

He is the epitome of patience, kindness, humility, and submission.

HE IS LOVE!

So next time you want to know what true love is, look to Jesus and know that you have all the love you'll ever need.  Then go out and love everyone around you with that love!  Jesus has given you the power to love others as he has loved you!  Be humble!  Be a servant!  Look to the interests and needs of others before your own.  Bear with those who are weaker in faith.  Bear the burdens of others as if they were your own.  Care for others as if their life depended on it.  FORGIVE ALWAYS!!!  Just love people!

Prayer: Lord, help us to get off our high horses and love the way you want us to love.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Jeremiah 1:4-19 (ESV)
Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations."

Then I said, "Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth." But the Lord said to me,

"Do not say, 'I am only a youth';
for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,
and whatever I command you, you shall speak.
Do not be afraid of them,
for I am with you to deliver you,
declares the Lord."

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me,

"Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.
10 See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms,
to pluck up and to break down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant."

17 But you, dress yourself for work;[c] arise, and say to them everything that I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. 18 And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you."

What goes above and beyond our comprehension in this passage is what the Lord says at the beginning, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you."   It is not just Jeremiah that God knows that way.  It is you too.  You were and are known by God.  You aren't just known in the sense that he knows who you are, but that he knows you better than you know yourself.  He knows your past, present, and future.  He knows whether you will stick with him or not.  He knows how long you're going to live.  He knows the minute you will take your last breath.

He also knows your deepest darkest secrets.  He knows that you are a complete and total mess, even though you seem all together on the outside.  He knows the evil thoughts you think.  He hears the evil things  you say before you say them.  (Can you imagine how many times a day he must cringe?)

Yet, even being omniscient as he is and knowing all your faults even better than you do, he still loves you!  HE STILL LOVES YOU!

He loves you because you are his child!  He loves you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, from heaven to earth, to live a perfect life, suffer, die, and rise again all for you!!

So next time you think no one is watching and you think you are getting away with something or are doing a good job of keeping it hidden, remember that the Lord knew you before you were even formed in your mother's womb.  But also know that he still loves you in spite of it all.

Prayer: Remind me every day of how much you know me and still love me.  Amen.

Opposites
Submitted by Jennifer Freudenburg, Project Manager for The Concordia Center for the Family Institute on the Ann Arbor Campus of Concordia University

Recently, as I entered a Target store, I began walking down the aisle passing the young girls section. I stopped dead in my tracks. I started laughing at what I was seeing. There were a number of racks of young girls swimming suits next to racks of snow suits.

Opposites – one set of clothing for very warm weather and one set of clothing for very cold weather – next to each other. I don't know if anyone else thought this was a little peculiar, but it stuck a cord with me.

My analogy? This depicts the emotional state of most pre-teen's. Their body is in flux, their emotions are spiraling up and down, and their value system is being challenged. Sometimes they feel opposites all at once. Do I wear a swim suit or a snow suit? Do I want to feel and act grown-up or do I just want to sit on Mom or Dad's lap and be cuddled? I want to stay calm, but I'm so upset and confused. Opposites!  Read more . . .

DEVOTION  Luke 4:16-30
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" 23 And he said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself.' What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well." 24 And he said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers[a] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.

The word "fickle" means "changing frequently especially as it regards one's loyalties interests, or affections.  As you read the passage above, were you as struck by the fickleness of the people in Nazareth as I was?

At first they were happy to see him.  Here was this hometown boy who made something good out of his life.  As he read the passage, they were all so very proud of him.  They had also heard that he had done miracles all over the place, so they couldn't wait for him to do some in his hometown as well.  Surely he would do some great things.

That's when things took a drastic turn.  Jesus doesn't tell them what they want to hear.  In fact, he tells them that there won't be any miracles done there in Nazareth.  Instead, he is going to be going to the Gentiles.  To the people in Nazareth, this was the most offensive thing he could say and do.  They got so mad at him, that he would rather spend time with the Gentiles and foreigners than the people of his hometown, that they started a riot and were about to when Jesus, and I don't know how he really did it, but it said he passed through their midst and got away.

The feelings of the people about Jesus went from pure pride and joy to wrath and disappointment in an instant simply because Jesus said something they didn't want to hear.

How fickle are you when it comes to Jesus, faith, and the church?  If I were to say something you didn't like, even if it were true and you needed to hear it, would you leave the church?

The law doesn't feel good when it hits us between the eyes.  Our first reaction to someone telling us that we're doing something wrong is probably not going to be favorable.  Yet, can we or should we hate someone when they tell us the truth even when it hurts?

You're gonna have to come to church this weekend to get the rest of this message.

Let us pray: Lord, help me to take you at your word, and help me to appreciate those who preach and speak your word to me, even when it hurts.  Help me to trust and have faith in all of you and not just the things that I like about you.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ:    What did Shechem do to Dinah, and what did Dinah's brothers do in revenge?

This answer comes from Denise Schlesselmann all the way in the Czech Republic.

So the answer to the question is that Shechem the Hivite saw Dinah while she was visiting the Hivite women. Dinah is the oft forgoten sibling of Joseph and his brothers. Shechem was the son of the ruler. Shechem decided Dinah was the girl for him but instead of first asking his dad to get the girl for him he "took her and violated her". But then he really fell in love with her and spoke tenderly to her. So now he asked his dad to get Dinah to be his wife. Hamor, Shechem's dad went to Jacob while his sons were there and told him "My son loves your daughter, let's have them get married. Then your sons can marry our daughters. You can live in our land." Shechem chimes in "I will pay any price I just want the girl!" Jacobs sons said "Okay but only if you get circumcised." Hamor and his sons said "Okay." They convinced all the men in the city to be circumcised so that they could marry into Jacob's family and the men could get their property too. 3 days after the circumcision Simeon and Levi went to the city and killed every man. The took Dinah back too. Then they took all their property, wives and children. Jacob was angry because he knew all the people where they lived were angry with Jacob's family. But the brothers said they were only defending their sister. It was after this that God told Jacob to leave and gave him the name of Israel
