KIDS SUNDAY SCHOOL WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE SUMMER!!!
Karin Klaustermeier is making some plans for a SUmmer Sunday school series.  Please bring your kids!  With Karin leading it, YOU KNOW IT WILL BE FUN!  There will be a video Bible story followed by some fun time outside!  Sunday school is every Sunday at 10:15  (It will move to 9:45 on July 1)  
 

DEVOTION:

Jesus said) "But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:23-24 Dublin, Ireland, has a patron saint: St. Laurence O'Toole. Laurence lived in the twelfth century, but most of his relics disappeared during the Reformation. Thankfully, those who venerate relics believe the important part of him -- his heart -- was preserved and has been sitting in St. Lauds Chapel for many, many years. Notice I said has been and not is sitting. That's because somebody has stolen the heart of Laurence O'Toole. It is not the first such crime in Ireland. Saint Brigid's Church in Killester has had some of its relics ripped off, and in another location thieves used hammers and angle grinders to help steal a "piece" the true cross. In the case of the St. Laurence robbery, those thieves passed by gold candlesticks and silver objects of church ware. They didn't want things of financial value; their focus was centered on getting that shriveled-up, old heart. My question is why? Are the criminals some college pledges who were given a challenge? Are they some people of faith who want to possess these relics at the exclusion of others; is it some crackpot fanatic from another religion who wishes to destroy these antiquities and injure the faith of those who believe in them? While I don't have the answer to those questions, I do know this: our God is in the heavens, and He wants those who worship Him to do so in spirit and truth. As Jesus told the Samaritan woman, the Lord is not found exclusively in Jerusalem or on Mount Gerizim in Samaria. He is not only in the heart of Laurence O'Toole, and He can't be confined or contained by a doubtful piece of the true cross. It is in our hearts where Spirit-given faith in the crucified and risen Savior comes closest to us. It is in our tongues that our witness becomes personal in its presentation. That is the kind of faith God wants us to have and the kind of proclamation He encourages us to make. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, like Elijah, humankind often looks for You in strange places. Grant us the realization that You can best be seen in the Holy Word that directs our eyes to Your Bethlehem manger, Calvary's cross, and Your borrowed and empty tomb. Let us see Your great grace and reflect it to others. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

SUNDAY WORSHIP TIME FOR THE EARLY SERVICE WILL CHANGE ON JULY 1 to 8:30am!!!
The voters approved the continuation of the 11am service and to move the early service time to 8:30 beginning July 1, to provide more time in between services for Bible class and Sunday school. 
 
Let's continue to praise the Lord wherever we are!  God is good ALL THE TIME, and all the time  GOD IS GOOD!

For DOLORES DEBLAZE as she deals with chemo treatments for stage four lung cancer.   

  

For JEANETTE KOEHLER who is recovering well at the Cedars from a broken hip.

DEVOTION:  They gave me poison for food and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. Psalms 69:21

The Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, seems like a nice enough fellow.

No, I've never met him, but the few times I've seen him speak on television, he seems to say a lot of nice things. No, he doesn't talk much about Jesus being the Savior, but Mr. Lama still struggles for peace and religious freedom for his followers.

As I said, he's a nice enough guy.

This is why I was surprised to hear him bring a complaint against the Chinese. It appears his aides picked up word that Chinese agents are training Tibetan women to poison him.

According to the information received, the ladies were supposed to have poison on their hair and poison on their shawls. Then, pretending to be his devoted followers, these women were supposed to come up to him and ask for his blessing.

Then, when Mr. Lama placed his hand on their heads or shoulders he would receive enough poison to kill him.

I was disturbed when I read this story and the hatred this reasonably nice guy seems to have engendered.

Maybe that's because, in some ways, it reminds me of the Savior's story. No, I'm not implying the Dalai Lama and Jesus are the same. Even on his best days Mr. Lama would not be worthy of untying Jesus' sandals.

No, the Dalai Lama story reminded me how much Jesus was hated.

The Gospels tell how He was hated by Herod, His hometown, His religion, His government and even some of the crowds of Jerusalem. All of them, in one way or another, plotted His murder. All of them wanted to see taken out of commission the one Person who was committed to getting their sins forgiven and their souls saved.

By God's wisdom, power and plan their hatred was used to accomplish God's goal of rescuing and redeeming us.

Then, three days after Jesus was buried, the plans of these murderers, was pushed to the side, as was the stone which had been placed before Jesus' tomb.

When the Savior emerged from that borrowed and now-empty tomb, He showed to all the world that the devil and death had been defeated.

Even more, sin's stranglehold on our lives had been broken. The poison of sin that had placed Jesus on the cross had been neutralized by the grace of God and the shed blood of the Savior.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, Scripture says all things work together for good to those who love You. We give thanks the same can be said for those who are loved by You. Keep us ever mindful of Your power and love that has been shown to us in the conquering Christ. In His Name I pray it. Amen

DEVOTION:  Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. Romans 12:17

Revenge is sweet.

How sweet? To find an answer to that question, I would encourage you to speak to Anna, a dentist in Poland. Last month, Marek, her ex-boyfriend -- the fellow who had just dumped her -- asked Anna to help him treat a toothache.

Anna decided to take the high road and treat the tooth like a professional. That was her intention.

But when Anna saw Marek in her chair, she gave him a massive dose of anesthetic and removed every tooth in his mouth. Then, having finished her work for the day, she wrapped his jaw in bandages and left her office.

As for Marek, when he awoke, he knew something wasn't quite right, but he had to get home and look in the mirror before he understood the immensity of his problem, and the intensity of his ex-girlfriend's thirst for revenge.

Yes, revenge is sweet, but it isn't necessarily God-pleasing. At least that's what Paul was trying to convey to the folks at Rome. Certainly, those Christians who were undergoing persecution for their faith had reason enough to want to give the Romans a dose of their own medicine.

"Revenge may be sweet," says Paul, "but don't you take it."

That was probably for a number of reasons. First, Paul knew a Christian with a vengeful heart was not going to be thanking the Savior for the work He had done to save us. Second, revenge-seeking Christians would not give a powerful witness to the world. Lastly, seeking revenge pretty much wipes out the words of Jesus who told us to love our enemies and do good to those who persecute us.

Now I don't know if you're one of those, "I-don't-get-mad, I-get-even" people. If you are, you might want to reevaluate and repent of your position.

Yes, revenge may be sweet but ultimately doing what the Lord has asked of us is sweeter still.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You remained silent even though You had every reason to seek revenge on the many that railroaded You to the cross. Grant us a new heart that will forgive those who have earned our disrespect. In Your Name. Amen.

PS - And in case you're wondering how the story is turning out, Marek is planning to have dental implants; his new girlfriend dumped him and, Anna, the dentist, is being investigated for medical malpractice. (Personally, I think they're going to have a hard time finding a jury that will convict her for pulling the teeth of an ex who asks for free dental work.)

Since our 11am worship has been approved to continue, and since I want to enhance this worship experience and grow it to its full potential, I am looking for musicians who want to play music for it and singers who want to sing. 
 
I am not looking for "perfect" or "polished" musicians and singers, but simply people who want to praise the Lord with what God has given them in their talents and abilities!

DEVOTION: ... The heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil. Ecclesiastes 8:11b

You've heard the question: if a tree falls in the woods and there is no one there to hear the sound, does it still make a noise?

Yup. It does.

How do I know? I put a tape recorder in the woods.

Here's a new question. If a man robs a bank but forgets to take the money with him, has he still committed a crime?

Yup. He has. I know because the law says anyone who "attempts to take any property, money, or thing of value in the care or custody of a bank has broken the law."

Just for the record, you should know this last question is not hypothetical. Recently, a man entered a Michigan Avenue bank in Chicago and told the clerk he was carrying a bomb. He handed a bag to the teller and demanded she fill it up. She started to do as asked, but the robber turned around and left before she could give back the bag.

Now here's where the story becomes pertinent for us.

There are times when all of us think about committing a sin. We think about it, but we don't put that particular sin into action. So, even though the sin hasn't been actively committed, is it still a sin?

Yup. It is. Like Ecclesiastes says, "the heart of the children of men is fully set to do evil."

That sinful nature, that corrupt heart, is part of all of us, which is why we need a Savior.

We need a Savior whose heart was pure and innocent, a Savior whose will was always aligned with that of the Heavenly Father, a Savior who could resist every temptation.

We have that Savior in the Person of Jesus. He has done all that we could not do. And, in so doing, He has managed to forgive our sins, change our eternal home and, by the Holy Spirit's power, create in us clean hearts.

And that, dear friends, is cause for our hearts to give thanks.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, my heart thinks of sin, relishes sin, and occasionally shows its sin in action. For all I have done wrong, I offer a plea for forgiveness. For all the Savior has done right, I offer a song of praise. In Jesus' Name, I give thanks for my salvation. Amen.

DEVOTION: TODAY'S DEVOTION IS ACTUALLY FROM ME!!

Hebrews 10:24-25  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
 
Our strategic planning committee has been working hard coming up with a plan for the future of St. John's and how to fulfill the desires and areas of emphasis on children and youth ministry.  We have been meeting together the last three Mondays to hash out this plan and to make it as effective, efficient, and successful as possible. 
 
One thing that we have been talkng a lot about is what it will take to make the plans effective and successful.  We have talked about different possibilities, different programs, and different strategies and it always comes down to one word, COMMITMENT.  We can make all the plans in the world.  We can plan to do all the right things, but unless the congregation is committed to it and works together on it, it will not be all it can be. 
 
I should rephrase that.  It is up to the Holy SPirit, as He is the one who does the work of bringing lost souls to Himself, of working faith in people, and in making us all holy.  the thing about it though is that the HOLY SPIRIT WORKS THROUGH US!  He does it as we witness.  He works through the Word spoken, preached, proclaimed and lived in and through us!
 
In the months ahead, as our plan is brought forward, is approved by the voters, and is implemented, the success or failure of it is going to depend on whether or not the members of this congregation buy into it, support it, and use their resources (time, talents and money) to bring it to fruition! 
 
Can we do it?  WE CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO GIVES US STRENGTH! 
 
The potential of this congregation is tremendous!  But it will take the whole congregation, working together, to make it go!  The Holy Spirit doesn't live in us just so He's got some place to take a snooze for a while!  The Holy Spirit lives in us to make us faithful and to WORK in us and through us! 
 
As we celebrate Pentecost this coming weekend, keep in mind that the HOLY SPIRIT LIVES IN YOU FOR A PURPOSE!  Find out what that purpose is and then run with it!  Do it!  Live in it!
 
Prayer:  Lord God, help me to live out my fulll potential in your Spirit so that I may do our purpose for me in bringing the lost to You, bring the saved closer to You, and grow closer to You myself.  Amen.

DEVOTION:
And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work He had done for Israel. Judges 2:10

One of the great things about being a grandparent is being able to indulge the grandchildren.

Of course, a grandparent can take things too far.

As evidence of that, I share the story of two grandparents who were recently arrested. Paul and Belinda Berloni were taken into custody for pulling their seven-year-old granddaughter in her plastic Hot Wheels car. She was wearing a swimming suit and no protective gear.

Oh, I forgot.

They were pulling their granddaughter behind their sports utility vehicle. The grandfather was driving, and the grandmother was sitting in the back with the hatch door up, cheering her grandchild on. Apparently, both had been drinking.

The arrest record relates that the grandparents said, "They were just having fun and had been doing it all day."

Now, I'm relatively sure the parents and grandparents who are reading this devotion have never done anything this crazy. On the other hand, there are times when we may fail to set an example for those young ones who are walking in our footsteps.

Apparently, that was the situation after Joshua died. It says that after the leader and those who had fought with him had left this earth, the next generation managed to forget everything the Lord had done.

In some ways, I believe this is the story of present-day North America. For generations we knew and recognized the Lord's hand and bounty. Now we are discovering more and more people who have concluded this great land has been created and is sustained by our own strength and human will. It hasn't and it isn't.

This is why, Christian parents and grandparents, I encourage you to spend a little extra time teaching your young ones about the Lord's handiwork in their lives. Teach them of all He has done for them and for our nation.

And don't pull them in their Hot Wheels behind your SUV.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, help us remember all You have done for us and share it with those who are coming after us. In Jesus' Name. Amen

SUNDAY WORSHIP TIME FOR THE EARLY SERVICE WILL CHANGE ON JULY 1to 8:30am!!!
The voters approved the continuation of the 11am service and to move the early service time to 8:30 beginning July 1, to provide more time in between services for Bible class and Sunday school. 
 
Let's continue to praise the Lord wherever we are!  God is good ALL THE TIME, and all the time  GOD IS GOOD!

DEVOTION:
And he (Ananias) said, "The God of our fathers appointed you to know His will, to see the Righteous One and to hear a voice from His mouth; for you will be a witness for Him to everyone of what you have seen and heard." Acts 22:14-15

Father Luke Strand has a parish, Holy Family, in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin.

A man of some humor, Father Luke has a black Volkswagen Beetle. On the doors of his black Volkswagen Beetle are stickers which say, "God Squad."

It is a humorous take-off on the giant electronic firm Best Buy's "Geek Squad."

When I heard about Father Luke's VW, I had a pretty good chuckle. It wasn't a knee slapper, but it did bring a short-lived smile.

Apparently, Best Buy doesn't agree. While Father Luke thought of his decorated "bug" as a way of spurring discussion and bringing his faith to others, the lawyers at Best Buy considered it a violation of their trademark.

That's why they sent Father Luke a cease-and-desist letter -- a letter he can't discuss in public.

Well, Father Luke may need to be silent, but I don't. You see, I'm not a lawyer, and I don't represent a giant electronics firm.

I do represent a Savior who isn't afraid of trademark infringements. His symbol is a cross, and He has told everybody to gather before it.

If you are a sinner, He says, "Come, and receive forgiveness."

If you are a great sinner, He says, "The invitation is especially for you."

If you are lonely, He says, "Come, and be with the Friend who loves you most."

If you are burdened, He says, "Come, and we will carry your troubles together."

If you are afraid of death, He says, "Come, I will take you through death's shadow into a place of perpetual life and joy."

And maybe, just maybe, because Jesus says those things, His followers and supporters make up the biggest organization this world has ever seen.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, like the rest of us, lawyers have a job to do. We respect them for doing it well. Most of all we respect You who successfully did the job entrusted to You by the Heavenly Father. Because You have finished this job, we are saved. VOTER'S MEETING ON SUNDAY, MAY 20, at 10:15!!
Two important items are on the agenda.
1. The building committee will present their newest ideas and findings, and the plan for the future.  
 
2. First we will vote whether or not to keep the 11am service (In January it was only decided that it would be temporary until this May meeting whenw e would decide whether or not to make it permanent.)  Then, if and when we decide to keep the 11am service, we will decide how to best change the service times so that we have enough time for fellowship and Sunday school between services.

HELP TO FEED HUNGRY KIDS IN WARREN COUNTY WITH OPERATION BACKPACK
In the preschool room there is a box that you can put food in to feed extremely low income children in Warren County.  Many of these kids get fed every day at school for breakfast and lunch, but what about the weekend?  What the food listed below does for many of these children is gets them through the weekend when food is especially scarce.
