DEVOTION: 1 Peter 2:2-10 English Standard Version (ESV)

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

"Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

"The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,"[a]

and

"A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense."

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

You have either been around a baby before or you were a baby at one time.  Babies have a very limited number of things they can do. They sleep, eat, cry, and poop.  Sometimes they can laugh, and they always look cute, but those are the main things.

So why does Peter tell us to be like babies and crave that pure spiritual milk?  Very simple, apart from Christ we can do nothing.  Apart from the pure spiritual milk of His Word and Sacraments we are lost.  Apart from receiving those most important of nutrients we will not grow up into the healthy Christian men and women he created us to be.

Instead of trusting in yourself, trust in Christ alone.  As awesome and wonderful as you are, you will fail.  You will disappoint yourself and others.  Take it from someone who knows.

Instead of looking for salvation, peace, meaning or grace in the shallow and worthless things the world has to offer, trust in Christ alone who is your life and salvation and you will be fulfilled, blessed and peace filled!

So be a baby today!  Be the infant son or daughter of Jesus and start drinking that pure spiritual milk of His grace!  It is the most refreshing drink that you will ever get!

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for giving me that pure spiritual milk of your Word and Sacraments so that I may grow up in your grace and peace.  Amen.

ARMED FORCES SUNDAY DOOR OFFERING WILL BE ON MAY 20 and 21!!

We will be a collecting a door offering to provide for Bible sticks for our soldiers.  Most armed forces personnel  can't take their phone or computers with them when they are deployed and paper Bibles are too inconvenient.  Bible sticks are just the right size and can fit easily into a pocket and carried wherever they go.  Each Bible stick cost $25 to make and to ship.  There have been over 800,000 of these Bible sticks given to soldiers since it began and thousands of more ready to ship.  They just need the funds to get them out the door.

Here's one testimony from a soldier.  "I am coming back into the arms of the Father who has never forsaken me. This mp3 Bible came right on time, because I have been contemplating suicide."

Please make a note for yourself to bring some money for this very worthy ministry next weekend!!!
