DEVOTION:  Isaiah 58:3-9 English Standard Version (ESV)

'Why have we fasted, and you see it not?
    Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?'
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,
[a]
    and oppress all your workers.
Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
    and to hit with a wicked fist.
Fasting like yours this day
    will not make your voice to be heard on high.
Is such the fast that I choose,
    a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it to bow down his head like a reed,
    and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast,
    and a day acceptable to the Lord?

"Is not this the fast that I choose:
    to loose the bonds of wickedness,
    to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed
[b] go free,
    and to break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
    and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
    and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
    and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you;
    the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
    you shall cry, and he will say, 'Here I am.'
If you take away the yoke from your midst,
    the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

Newsflash!  Fasting is not meant to make you feel better, or to improve yourself, according to the Lord.  That's right.  When you fast it should be for the reasons you just read in verses 6 and 7.  It should be to humble yourself and put others first.  It should be to show your weakness and God's power.  It is not about making yourself better, or so that others see you in a better light.  It isn't about proving that you can do it.  It's simply to show you that God is in control even of your stomach.

Quit trying to impress God.  Quit trying to show him how much your made of.  And please quit trying to show everyone else up by your piety.  No one needs to see how good you are.  They need to see how much of a sinner you know you are.  They need to see that you are a truly humble person in need of Christ's forgiveness so that they know that they have a chance with Jesus too.

Instead, love people with God's love.  Feed the hungry.  Clothe the naked.  Shelter the needy.  Loose the bonds of wickedness, in other words, FORGIVE AND BE FORGIVEN!!!

Let us pray: Lord, humble me so that you may be exalted among those who need to know you most of all.  Amen.
