DEVOTION:  (I'm sure many of you have read this before, but I think it is still a good reminder of what worship and "church" is all about.)

Why Go To Church?
A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."

This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!"  Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

Prayer:  Lord God, help us to realize that we need spiritual nourishment just as much as we need physical nourishment.  TO now you is to know peace.  Give us peace this July 4th weekend as we celebrate our DEPENDENCE on you!  Amen.

CATECHESIS:
8th commandment: You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
QUESTION: What does God require of us in the eighth commandment?
ANSWER:
a. We should defend our neighbor, that is, we should speak up for and protect our neighbor from false accusations,
b. We should speak well of our neighbor, that is, we should praise our neighbor's good actions and qualities,
c. We should put the best meaning on everything, that is, we should explain our neighbor's actions in the best possible way.

BIBLE QUESTION FOR THIS WEEK:  Where was Tema located?  Tema - south; desert, one of the sons of Ishmael, and father of a tribe so called which settled at a place to which he gave his name, some 250 miles south-east of Edom, on the route between Damascus and Mecca, in the northern part of the Arabian peninsula, toward the Syrian desert; the modern Teyma'.

SURVEY QUESTION FOR THE WEEK:  What can I (or the church) do to get people to come to church?  (Worship attendance has been at a ten year low for the past two months.)

(An answer from Jim Rahn) You ask, what can we do to get people to come to church. My only thought is that people who come to church regularly have a deep and abiding faith that comes from a personal relationship with God. If you have an actual relationship, it cannot exist only on Sunday morning. A real relationship is one that allows you to ask for help and guidance with every day living. To ask for forgiveness when our frailties and shortcomings become evident to us. To walk with God on a daily basis requires a belief that you can rely on God for a little help or a lot of help depending on what you need. Then if that "person" you're in a relationship with wants you to do something you're glad to do it

REVOLVE DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING JULY 17-19
This is the question we will be asking ourselves in many and various ways in the coming weeks.

Too often we merely think of the Gospel and salvation as something that we will receive when we die and not something that guides and fills our life right here and right now.  Our salvation is for us to enjoy right now and to share with others right now.

We don't think of the church as something more than a place, when really it is a people!  The church doesn't exist without the relationships and love of the people in it?  What have you been thiking about the church lately?

When we think of mission, what comes to mind?  Who are missionaries?  Aren't you one?  If you are a Christian then you most certainly are, because you have been called to be one by the Holy Spirit.

What then is discipleship?  Isn't it simply living a true and real CHRISTIAN life?

On July 17-19 Pastor Andy Whaley from Plano, TX will be here to explore the issue of discipleship further, to encourage and challenge us to be better disicples and disciple makers, and to give us a plan of action to do so.  In the coming weeks I will be calling on many of you to be a part of this weekend.  Maybe you can beat me to the punch and sign up before I ask you.  Simply call me to sign up and be ready for a wonderful time of learning how God's love really is a part of St. John's.
