DEVOTION: See, I will make you small among the nations; you will be utterly despised.  The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, 'Who can bring me down to the ground?' Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down," declares the Lord.  Obadiah 2-4

The Israelites had gotten way to prideful.  In their pride and self importance they forgot the One who gave them the very nation that they were as well as the ground they lived on.  Instead they set up gods of wood and stone and even set themselves up above the one true God.  In this passage God is, in essence, condemning them for their turn away from God and telling them that he is going to bring them down to the level at which they should be.  He is doing this not to completely destroy them, but so that they may turn their hearts and minds back to Him.

THis lesson is a reminder to us as well.  Sometimes we let our pride get the best of us.  We get a little too self important, a little too full of ourselves and begin to think that we are better than others, that somehow the faith that we have been given makes us better than the rest of humanity.  Then, at those times, God seems to move further and further away, when really it is we who are moving further away from God.  Then, in God's place Satan moves in to tempt and deceive us.  Oh what a terrible thing pride is.  It has caused the downfall of many a person.

Thanks be to God that he so often steps in just in the nick of time.  He causes our hearts to be humbled in many and different ways and through many circumstances so that we are able to realize and respect who is really in charge of our lives and who truly is the real guide.

He does this so that we repent of our sins and turn back to Him so that we can be saved from eternal destruction.

The Israelites wouldn't have needed to go through what they went through if they would have just made use of all the spiritual gifts that God had given them.  Instead they turned to the things of the world for comfort and joy.  Too often we wait too long and need to be humbled instead of humbling ourselves through Word and Sacraments.  May you take full advantage of the grace given you in Word and Sacraments so that you don't have to go through too many humbling experiences.

Prayer: Lord God keep me from becoming too proud and conceited.  Help me to stay humble through the use of Your gifts so that you may be praised.  Amen.

PASTOR DOROW SURPRISE CELEBRATION
On June 28 Pastor Dorow's church will be having a celebration of his twentieth year in ministry.  They would like to have any pictures, funny stories, words of encouragement, or anything of that nature to use at this celebration of his twentieth year.  They need to have things by the 21st in order to get everything set up and ready by the 28th.

If you would like to send something, please send it to me or bring it in to the office by Thursday, June 18 and I will send all of it off together.

This is all a surprise for him so don't let him know.

DISCIPLESHIP-- WHAT IS IT?  (REVOLVE DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING JULY 17-19)
This is the question we will be asking ourselves in many and various ways in the coming weeks.

Too often we merely think of the Gospel and salvation as something that we will receive when we die and not something that guides and fills our life right here and right now.  Our salvation is for us to enjoy right now and to share with others right now.

We don't think of the church as something more than a place, when really it is a people!  The church doesn't exist without the relationships and love of the people in it?  What have you been thiking about the church lately?

When we think of mission, what comes to mind?  Who are missionaries?  Aren't you one?  If you are a Christian then you most certainly are, because you have been called to be one by the Holy Spirit.

What then is discipleship?  Isn't it simply living a true and real CHRISTIAN life?

On July 17-19 Pastor Andy Whaley from Plano, TX will be here to explore the issue of discipleship further, to encourage and challenge us to be better disicples and disciple makers, and to give us a plan of action to do so.  In the coming weeks I will be calling on many of you to be a part of this weekend.  Maybe you can beat me to the punch and sign up before I ask you.  Simply call me to sign up and be ready for a wonderful time of learning how God's love really is a part of St. John's.

A NOTE FROM PASTOR
As your pastor it is my job to care for your spiritual needs.  It is my job to make sure that your spiritual life is going in the right direction and that you are growing in your faith.  It is my job to help you in whatever way I can to grow in that spiritual life.  Unfortunately I can't read minds, nor can I be everywhere all the time, and so I am not always aware of times when you may need my help.  Also, I am human so I am not always the most in tune to what may be going on in your life.  I am often the last one to find out about things that are going on with you.  Please never assume that I know what is going on with you and your life.  Please also never assume that I am "too busy" or that your need is "too small".  If you need spiritual help please know that I am always there for you 24 hours a day.  I am just a phone call or email away.  revklaus@hotmail.com or 456-1173.

I am here for all of you!  I want to help you.  I want to give you the tools you need to grow spiritually.  I will meet with you anytime, anywhere to pray with you, to give you spiritual guidance, and to share the Gospel with you.
